10 ways to achieve greater client loyalty

Maintaining good relationships with existing customers is more important and cost-effective than finding new ones.

Getting new customers is much more expensive (in time, effort and resources) than keeping existing ones.

So, it would be much more beneficial to build loyalty among current customers rather than starting over time and again from scratch to make new ones.

Clients who are satisfied with a freelancer’s work and attitude will not hesitate to hire them again.

A sustainable customer base is key to business success, isn’t that the case with corporations?

Think of any large, medium or small company name and the strategy is always the same – retain customers and create brand loyalty.

A freelancer also has their own business and the goal is to increase income and boost growth based on a solid portfolio of stable customers.

Here are 10 tips to help build client loyalty.

1. Guarantee quality work within the agreed deadline

A satisfied client returns. This is the main premise on which all of the following is based. There are many resources available to manage day-to-day work.

Read up on how best to meet deadlines and tips for time management.

2. Show passion and commitment

The client does not expect anything less than to see a professional involved in their work, dedicated and committed to the project.

Enthusiasm spreads.

Seeing someone “with their T-shirt on” (that is to say, playing on the same team) will let clients know you really care about their business. This will encourage them to hire them again.

3. Be honest

Clients value honesty, so do not make promises you cannot keep. Always be honest and do not hesitate to say no if something cannot be achieved.

It is best to be clear from the beginning in order to avoid misunderstandings or unexpected results. The client will appreciate your honesty.

4. Use listening skills

Establish two-way communication. Be a good listener. Learn how to negotiate and analyse situations objectively to make the most of them for both parties.

It is key that clients feel listened to and that the freelancer is aware of their needs and expectations.

5. Be professional

Apply knowledge wisely, manage oneself with respect and cordiality, be consistent, respect the agreed conditions, adapt to your client’s schedule and aim for excellence in your work.

6. Generate added value

Beyond the specific task, always add value to the work. Your client will appreciate having a freelancer willing to go a little further than what they were hired to do (always within certain limits, of course).

Creative suggestions? More logo options than originally asked for? A new approach to a news story?

Find a way to let your client know you are involved with the project and feel a part of it.

7. Be proactive

Do not wait for your client to tell you what to do every step of the way. Anticipate, gain autonomy. Suggest solutions. Apply macro vision and when in doubt, ask.

It is super positive for your client to see you in action, being independent.

The client has hired a professional who should know how to do their job and give their best.

8. Foster interpersonal relationships

As a freelancer, put yourself in your client’s shoes. Treat them the way you want to be treated.

Always maintain a relationship based on respect and listening. Earn your client’s confidence, show your professional skills, but also your human side.

9. Answer email

Let your clients know you are there. Even if it is only to send confirmation that an email has been received.

Do not stop answering, especially since most client-freelancer communications today is remote and there is no face-to-face contact through meetings.

10. Keep in touch with past clients

It’s always good to keep in touch, even with clients you are not currently working with.

Keep them informed about your work situation and current projects. It is a way to be present and remind them you still exist.

There are many means of communication – email, Skype, social networks and so on. Find the one that best suits your needs and use it.

It may take months to gain a new client, so pay attention to the present ones, generating trust, establishing good communication and showing the value of your work.
