The link between exercise and productivity

Studies have shown people finish work on time, concentrate better, and feel more motivated on days when they work out.

It is a simple fact that working out for at least 30 mins daily, five days a week, helps keep obesity and related diseases – including cardiac problems, diabetes, and hypertension – at bay. But did you know regular exercise can also help you be more productive at work?

In a study performed by Bristol University in England, participants scored better when it came to finishing work on time, concentrating more, feeling motivated, and working without unscheduled breaks on days when they exercised.

Here are five ways regular workouts can improve workplace productivity.

1. Improves mood

Exercise leads to the release of hormones like endorphins, which promote feelings of positivity and wellbeing while suppressing chemicals such as adrenaline that trigger tension and anxiety.

A good mood will lead to better concentration at work while making you feel motivated, thus helping you to be more productive.

2. Increases energy

If you have been feeling lethargic, try getting up and moving more. Thirty minutes of activity daily can help you feel more energised.

It doesn’t have to be a high-intensity workout – just getting your heart to beat faster can stimulate your mind and body.

3. Helps with sleep

The importance of a good night’s sleep cannot be overstated. Without it, you will not only feel tired but also be unable to focus at work.

According to John Hopkins Medicine, exercising can help with insomnia and has a similar effect as sleeping pills. So, to have a productive day, get a good night’s sleep – and for deep, uninterrupted sleep, get moving.

4. Boosts concentration

Exercising makes your heart beat faster and pump more oxygenated blood to all parts of your body. This not only improves your physical health but your brain functions as well.

5. Reduces stress

Stress takes a toll on the mind and body, which, in turn, affects your productivity. Exercise is one way of keeping pressure and tension at arm’s length.

With workouts improving your sleep quality, uplifting your mood, and enhancing your stamina, stress will not bog you down as much.

So what are you waiting for? Start exercising regularly, and see for yourself what a difference it makes!
