Everyone knows staying active is important as it keeps you physically well and also has a positive impact on mental health. But while many people enjoy being active, many more look for reasons not to exercise.
Here are three of the most common excuses people give for not factoring some physical exercise into their day, and practical tips to overcome them.
1. ‘No time to exercise as I am a full-time parent / I have a full-time job’
If you go to work, try taking the stairs instead of the lifts or escalators. No time to take the stairs in the morning, or prefer not to break a sweat? Do it in the evening or anytime in between.
A few times up and down the stairs – especially up – can work wonders as it is a high-intensity cardio workout.
Exercise while you are on the phone or watching television. There are many workouts that can be done with resistance bands while you’re lying down browsing on your phone, on top of simple activities such as spot jogging or jumping jacks.
Walk on a treadmill or ride an exercise bike while watching TV.
If you are a new parent, take your baby out for a stroll in the neighbourhood every day for an hour. If your children are slightly older, you can also play ball or a fun sport like badminton to stay fit.

2. ‘Exercise is boring’
You don’t actually need to visit a gym to work out, or have a full range of weights and dumbbells at your disposal. You can dance, swim, run, jump rope, play football, or do anything that makes you happy – as long as you’re moving and being active.
Work out with a friend or join group activities. Exercising with like-minded people – or people in general – can be more fun and motivating than doing it alone.
Listen to music, podcasts, or the radio while working out, or watch your favourite TV show. Make it an enjoyable experience that you look forward to every day rather than a chore.
3. ‘I don’t have the energy’
Work out during the time of day when you feel the most active. It doesn’t have to be in the morning or evening – you know your body best, so find the most suitable time when you feel like moving.
Remember, exercise makes you feel more energetic and helps you sleep well. Give it a try one day and see how much better you feel afterwards.
