Paula (not her real name) used to hate catching glimpses of her reflection at the wrong angle, and avoided candid photos because she hated her profile.

After seeing a patient’s transformation on social media, she consulted a cosmetic surgeon about chin liposuction. The doctor explained that, while she did have extra fat on her neck and chin, Paula was really missing the structure.

He recommended a chin implant along with chin/neck liposuction. She was still swollen two weeks after the procedure, but the improvement she was able to observe so far was unbelievable.

Those who are unhappy with the overall look and structure of their chins can opt for surgical enhancement. Here, Paula shares some helpful knowledge so those who are interested in this procedure can know what to expect.

1. What is chin augmentation?

It is a cosmetic procedure that aims to enhance the look of the chin by increasing its height and projection. This is often done with an implant, but it can also involve restructuring the bones by moving them into a different position.

2. Why should one undergo this procedure?

The procedure improves the proportions of one’s face. If the chin is too small, it can make the nose appear large, and vice-versa. If the chin is too short, the top part of the face can appear disproportionate to the lower half.

3. Are the results obvious?

No, the procedure is intended to be subtle. The purpose of a chin augmentation is to balance out facial features. After the procedure, the patient’s chin will be in better harmony with the rest of their face.

4. What other procedures can be done?

Chin augmentation can be performed alone or alongside other cosmetic procedures. Commonly, it can be combined with a rhinoplasty (nose), buccal fat excision (cheeks), or liposuction of the neck.

Chin augmentation can make the neck look slimmer and more attractive. A liposuction or lift can further contour the neck and jawline.

5. How does a chin implant affect the appearance of the nose?

If a nose is large, it can make the chin appear small. Likewise, a small chin can make the nose look big.

With chin augmentation, the nose can look smaller or larger, depending on the patient’s facial structure.

6. Why does the implant make a difference in a person’s appearance?

The chin is hugely responsible for balancing the face and neck. Men are considered more handsome when they have a strong jawline. Women are thought of as more beautiful when their chins are smaller and daintier.

Proportionate balance in the chin is important for both genders.

7. Are there alternatives to an implant?

Most chin augmentations are done using an implant. However, it is possible to modify the jawbone in some surgeries.

8. Can an implant move?

A chin implant will remain in place after the patient has healed. It is, however, possible for the implant to move before the healing process is complete. This is not common but can be corrected.

9. Can it be removed?

Yes, a chin implant can be removed. In some cases, the implant might cause a depression in the bone below, which could result in even less projection than the patient originally had.

10. How long does a chin implant last?

Unlike breast implants, a chin implant does not need to be replaced; it is solid and nothing can leak from it. The recipient can keep their implant for a lifetime.
