Looking after the mind for a healthier body

Most people focus on physical wellbeing but forget that caring for mental health is equally as important.

Most people look after their physical wellbeing by walking or jogging outdoors, or working out at home or at the gym. But, as the mind has a direct link with the body, it is equally crucial to look after one’s mental health, especially given the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

Your thoughts have a profound effect on your physical wellbeing, for what you think and feel can affect your biological processes positively or negatively. Hence, keeping your mind healthy can boost your immunity.

Unless you are mentally healthy, you will not sleep well. And when you do not get enough rest, your body will show signs of weaknesses, leading you to fall sick more easily.

Here are some ways to keep mentally fit.

  • Meditate

Just like a workout exercises the body, meditation is exercise for your mind. It can help you control haphazard thoughts, be more relaxed, and have a clearer outlook on life and its challenges.

Meditation can also enhance memory, boost cognitive abilities, and optimise emotional intelligence.

  • Daydream

Did you know daydreaming can be beneficial to a certain extent? If you have an ambition about your work life, or personal goals you would like to reach, start visualising them.

Thinking positively about the future can boost serotonin, the chemical in your brain that makes you happy, which in turn will keep you motivated towards fulfilling your objectives.

  • Play games

A great way to keep your mind healthy while spending time with your loved ones is by playing games. Engage in outdoor activities by going to a park or playground with your children, or spend a day at the beach playing in the sand or flying a kite.

If you prefer to stay indoors, working on jigsaw puzzles is a great way to exercise the mind while engaging in a family activity. Otherwise, try crosswords or Sudoku for a solo challenge.

  • Cut down on stress

Stress not only affects your mind but can also lead to lifestyle diseases like hypertension and diabetes. While it is impossible for life to be 100% stress-free, finding ways to relax and reduce pressure on yourself will help in the long run.

Read, enjoy a bath, travel to your favourite destinations, take up a hobby like arts and craft or baking, and try to find simple pleasures in life.
