3 ways for working parents to look after themselves

It can be difficult to balance one's job with responsibilities at home, but simple changes can help improve mental-physical wellbeing.

Working parents tend to put their own needs last. They look after their families and get so engrossed with caring for them that they often forget to look after themselves.

Feeling lethargic with everyday work, losing self-esteem due to a negative body image, and getting depressed from trying to juggle everything is a constant struggle faced by almost every working parent.

But it doesn’t necessarily have to be this way. Small changes can work wonders and turn things around.

Once you start putting your needs first, everything falls into place. And while it might seem selfish, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. After all, how do you expect to take care of others if you, yourself, are unwell?

Here are three ways to make your health a priority.

1. Put your mind to it

Everything starts with a goal. Make up your mind to get healthier and stick to a routine.

Working out might seem monotonous, and you would probably think of a thousand tasks you should be doing instead. But think of your family and remember that you are doing this for them as well.

So, set the target of becoming fitter and healthier, and do what it takes to reach that target.

2. Get moving

You don’t have to join a gym or a fitness programme to become fit. All you have to do is move.

Go for a brisk walk, jog or skip rope, or go for regular hikes or swims. The point is to stay active and dedicate time to move.

If you don’t have the time to do these activities on your own, take your family with you. Make it fun family time, and they will become fitter in the process, too.

You can also incorporate little changes in your daily life such as climbing stairs instead of taking the lift, walking around the house when you’re on the phone, and so on. These might not seem like much, but small changes can go a long way.

3. Take care of mental health

Remember to take time out for yourself. Practise yoga or meditation, or go for a walk.

Start doing the above and see the difference it makes to your mental wellbeing. You will have more energy and feel better about yourself, which will also elevate your mood.

The trick is to stop waiting for the right time and just start doing. Your family will thank you because you will be in better shape and temperament to look after them.
