KUALA LUMPUR:
There is so much to love at Limóne café. From its Paris café vibe to its lemon-yellow walls and soft French music filling the air.

But the highlight of any café is its fare, and at Limóne’s, their fusion food is a feast for the eyes as well as the belly. Beautifully plated and looking almost like works of art, you could very well find yourself reluctant to dig in.

FMT recently caught up with founders Sherina Binwani and Tee Jiunn Hoong, who together opened the café in September last year.

“After having to close my own wellness retreat in Bali because of the pandemic, I turned to baking as it’s such a therapeutic thing to do, and to combat boredom,” Sherina said.

Acting on her daughters’ suggestion, Sherina began selling her cakes and pastries online but realised soon enough that she needed help with cake decorating when more complex orders started streaming in.

By a stroke of luck, she met pastry and cake decorating wizard Tee through a mutual friend. Tee himself was working out of his home then, taking orders for customised cakes and was only too happy to help Sherina decorate her cakes.

It didn’t take long before the pair began entertaining ideas of opening a café together.

“When we first started, we only wanted to focus on cakes and pastries. But by the next month or so, we tweaked our menu to include hot meals,” Sherina said. Then came fusion food and the natural progression to breakfast and lunch items as well, she added.

If you find pasta simply irresistible, place an order right away for the spicy seafood squid ink pasta.

An explosion of colours makes this dish a feast for the eyes – black swirls of pasta, bright yellow curry sauce and a serving of orange-coloured prawns with clams and oysters. Spicy and flavourful, this is quite a memorable dish.

Another beautifully plated meal is the smoked salmon eggs benedict. The salmon rosettes flanking the poached eggs on brioche buns are an absolute delight to tuck into with its light drizzling of hollandaise sauce.

For something closer to home, the spicy tempe is quite the treat. While many are used to enjoying this fermented soybean cooked in a typical sambal style, Limóne’s version with a spicy-sweet sauce topped with slices of fragrant ‘bunga kantan’ is a joy to savour.

To usher in the Year of the Rabbit, this dainty gateau is a decadent dessert to share with friends. (Muhaimin Marwan @ FMT Lifestyle)

The café has something special too to usher in the Year of the Rabbit – a dainty gateau in the image of the sweetest-looking bunny. As hard as it may be to disfigure this work of art, cut you must if you wish to indulge in the melt-in-your-mouth cake inside, filled with a cheese mousse and pineapple slices.

The bright yellow lemon cake looks very much like a real lemon, and checks all the boxes for a sinful after-lunch indulgence. You may not wish to share this and nobody will blame you – it’s that delicious!

If you’ve taken a fancy to their desserts, you can order customised cakes as well for special events – simply enquire at the counter. You can also book the café for small gatherings.
