KUALA LUMPUR:
The Bedouins are the Arabic-speaking desert nomads of the Middle East. And it is believed that the word “Bedouin” comes from the word “Badawi”, which means “desert dweller” in Arabic.

So, when one restaurant wanted to showcase Middle Eastern cuisine in all its glory, they chose the name Royal Bedouin.

“After all, our mission is to provide authentic dishes to our customers and what can be more traditional and authentic than the Bedouin tribes of Arabia,” shared Muhammad Faisel Abdat, 31, director of The Bedouins Sdn Bhd.

Using only premium quality spices in their cooking, Faisel said: “In addition to being flavourful, the food here is also very healthy as most items on our menu are grilled instead of fried.”

The outlet in Plaza Damas, Hartamas is the second opened by the group. The first outlet in Taman Tun Dr Ismail was opened six years ago.

The restaurant has an elegant and inviting décor, with both indoor and outdoor seating available. One cannot help but also notice the beautiful paintings with inspiring quotes on the walls.

Apart from catering to large events, the establishment also has a private dining area that seats 16 to 20 people, ideal for smaller groups.

Tasting notes

The soft and tasty Mulawwah flat bread with hummus can be pretty addictive. According to Faisel, the hummus is made daily. If you like chickpea, you’ll enjoy this restaurant’s smooth and rich rendition of hummus.

The flat bread is also perfect for scooping up portions of the Fahsa Lamb. Served in a lava stone bowl to retain heat longer, the dish of tender, shredded meat is bursting with flavours. Apart from lamb, other “Fahsa” options include beef and chicken.

The Chicken Mandy is a hearty and tasty meal. (Moganraj Villavan @ FMT Lifestyle)

The Chicken Mandy is also rather unforgettable. Served with a flavourful bowl of lamb broth called Maraq, the rice is aromatic and soft, with the meat practically falling off the bone – so, dig in and enjoy!

Meanwhile, the mixed grill platter is just the thing for meat lovers. Each platter consists of a combination of cubed beef tenderloin, shish tawook (marinated and grilled chicken cubes), as well as chicken and lamb kebabs.

Served with a side of French fries, the meats are tender and tasty. And in case you’re wondering about the pita bread on which the meat is served, Muhammad revealed with a smile: “It absorbs the oils from the meat, and it actually tastes nice.”

Now for dessert! The kunafa is certainly a must-try. This traditional Middle Eastern dessert is decadent and heavenly, with the layer upon layer of thin phyllo pastry providing a heavenly crunch in stark contrast to the gooey homemade cream cheese inside.

Each serving of kunafa is made upon order, and at least 45 minutes is needed to prepare the dessert. A small serving is perfect for two to three people, medium (four to six), and large (six to nine).

The medium and large portions are elaborately presentated at your table – so sit back and enjoy.

The kunafa is first held over a roaring fire, then drizzled with sugar syrup, before being topped off with a sprinkling of pistachio nuts. You can even request your preferred level of sweetness.

You may find it hard to stop at just one cup of aromatic Adeni Tea. (Moganraj Villavan @ FMT Lifestyle)

Finally, end your meal with a hot cup of Turkish coffee or Adeni tea. The coffee is rich and strong, with a pleasant hint of spice while the tea is sweet, milky and infused with spices as well.
