This special day may fall on a work day this year, but don’t let this get in the way of romance. You can still make the most of it with a cosy dinner for two at home followed by a romantic movie on the telly that you can cuddle up to together.
Here are some of FMT’s suggestions.
1. ‘Always Be My Maybe’ (2019)
Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park) may not be the most conventional couple in this 2019 rom-com, but the pair carried the film with so much charm and chemistry that you’ll find yourself rooting for them from the get go.
Heartwarming and relatable at the same time, even the somewhat hard-hearted will love this movie. There’s even a hilarious Keanu Reeves cameo in it!
Favourite quote: “I want you to call me out when I’m not pushing myself hard enough. I wanna have a family with you, I wanna spend my life with you, even if it scares me. Even if I’m scared everyday as I am right now. So my question is, Sasha Tran, can I hold your purse for you?” – Marcus
2. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ (2018)

Meeting your partner’s family for the first time is nerve-wracking enough, but for Rachel (Constance Wu) it’s extra stressful when she realises her boyfriend’s family is crazy rich and akin to royalty in Singapore.
Soon, everyone in Nick’s (Henry Golding) family starts to weigh in on the relationship and Rachel has to decide if she’s in it for the long run.
Fast becoming a classic, this rom-com features the all-too-real struggles to get in your partner’s family’s good graces, with stand out supporting performances from Michelle Yeoh and Gemma Chan.
Favourite quote: “I’m not leaving because I’m scared, or because I think I’m not enough. Because maybe for the first time in my life, I know I am.” – Rachel
3. ‘La La Land’ (2016)

In this 2016 musical romance movie, Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) are torn between their careers and their love for each other when they realise both can’t necessarily coexist.
Stone and Gosling excel in their third movie together that’s packed with fun musical numbers and emotional solos.
Featuring gorgeous visuals, powerful performances and a balance between romance and reality, the film tugs at the heart strings of many who have had to make the same decision before.
Favourite quote: “I’m always gonna love you.” – Mia
4. ‘How to Be Single’ (2016)

There are many ways to be single, as shown in this underrated 2016 rom-com that follows Dakota Johnson’s Alice.
Taking a break from her boyfriend of four years, Alice has to learn to navigate life in New York City, with the help of her sister Meg (Leslie Mann) and fun-loving colleague Robin (Rebel Wilson).
The film offers a realistic and modern take on dating, with no shortage of lighthearted moments. If you’re looking for a non-stereotypical romantic movie, give this one a try.
Favourite quote: “The thing about being single is, you should cherish it. Because, in a week, or a lifetime, of being alone, you may only get one moment. One moment, when you’re not tied up in a relationship with anyone. A parent, a pet, a sibling, a friend. One moment, when you stand on your own. Really, truly single. And then… It’s gone.” – Alice
5. ‘Clueless’ (1995)

One of the many adaptations of the Jane Austen novel Emma, this version takes place in a 90’s high school setting.
In arguably her best role, Alicia Silverstone plays Cher, a ditzy high schooler who takes the new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) under her wing. While trying to play matchmaker, Cher finds love for herself as well.
Entertaining, iconic and full of classic quotes, the movie’s fashion is also one of the reasons it remains beloved today, with many girls still trying to emulate Cher’s stylish outfits.
Favourite quote: “I’m not a prude, I’m just highly selective.” – Cher
