Come and see how the self-professed “grumpy, joke-telling machine” turns two years of lockdown, a total loss of income, and a global pandemic into two nights of hilarity.
“KAVIN JAY: I am sorry I SHOUTED” will see the comedian explore his relationship with family, and how his experiences give him hope for a better tomorrow.
Also, expect “jokes about angry Indian people”.
Explaining the title, Kavin says it refers to a line he often uses in his routines. “I sometimes get passionate and shout at people, only to feel sorry about it afterwards,” he tells FMT with a chuckle.
The 42-year-old is thankful to be back on stage again, whether it’s a solo show or with fellow comedic friends.
“I’ve missed the instant gratification, the energy from the audience. I’ve done Zoom shows but it’s not the same; some comedians thrive in the virtual environment, but I don’t. So it’s great to be able to do this again.”
‘Personal and embarrassing’
Kavin’s Netflix show “Everybody Calm Down” was released in 2018 and subsequently landed on both The Wrap and IndieWire’s top 10 lists of best Netflix specials that year.
Contrary to his previous acts that usually contain rapidfire “jokes-jokes-jokes”, Kavin reveals that this time around, audiences can expect a more introspective show.
“I talk more about personal stuff, things that are embarrassing, stories I usually wouldn’t tell” – including his relationship with his daughter, as well as an unfortunate incident in Bangsar many years ago that may or may not involve a bear.
“As a society, we tend not to talk about things such as mental health and men’s health. We should really start to embrace our emotional side, and the fact that when we keep things buried, it eats us up from the inside,” he says of his decision to go down the reflective route.
“That said, I will still shout at you, but at least I’m apologetic about it.”
Catch Kavin tomorrow and Saturday, Feb 18 & 19, at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC), 1Utama Shopping Centre. Shows start at 8.30pm and tickets, priced at RM84, can be purchased here.
