KUALA LUMPUR:
For band members of Eyelitz Buskers, being visually-impaired has proved to be no barrier to honing their musical talent.

The four, who play the guitar, keyboard, drum and electric guitar have been captivating local audiences for quite some time now.

The group’s lead vocalist Mohd Nazri Mohd Sahri, 30, who was born blind, said he got hooked on the guitar at just four years old after hearing his uncle play.

“So, I learnt to play the guitar by listening or by heart. We (the blind) listen from the heart and we know the key, the note, whether it is A minor or B minor,” he told Bernama after performing at the “Kau dan Aku” mini concert at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday.

Another member of the group, Muhammad Tirmizi Muslim, 30, who plays the electric guitar, said he was grateful for the chance to play in the concert held in conjunction with International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Tirmizi, who is a street performer or busker with the group, said he was initially nervous about performing on stage but that the audience’s applause was a great confidence-booster.

The group’s drummer, Mohamad Zaki Norizan, 28, a graduate in Malay Studies from Universiti Malaya (UM), said he lost his sight when he was just five years old due to Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system which is part of the immune system.

Currently a busker, Zaki said he hoped to get a more secure job so he could develop his musical talent.

Meanwhile, self-taught keyboardist Mohd Safiq Arshad, 29, who was also born blind, said he began playing the keyboard in primary school by listening to musical notes and memorising hand movements.
