LONDON:
The concept driving “Amy: Beyond the Stage”? To portray Amy Winehouse as the “music intellectual” she really was.

To achieve this, the Design Museum partnered with the singer’s estate manager, The Estate of Amy Winehouse, and her stylist and long-time friend, Naomi Parry.

The result is an immersive exhibition mixing clothes and personal objects that belonged to the tortured queen of soul.

Among them are diaries she wrote as a teenager, manuscripts containing the lyrics to some of her biggest hits, photographs and stage clothes such as the famous yellow dress Amy Winehouse wore at the 2007 Brit Awards.

Music lovers will also be able to discover the Fender electric guitar that the singer used in her first album, “Frank.”

Revisiting Amy’s story

Priya Khanchandani, the Design Museum’s head of curatorial, explained to the Guardian, “It felt like there was something that had been left unsaid about Amy’s story and about her as a serious musician – the way she’d been reflected in the media had really diminished her legacy.

There’s a lot of noise surrounding her story that has engulfed it and I’ve been trying to pick away at the layers, and make sure we tell the right story.”

The items on display will emphasize Amy Winehouse’s considerable and little known influence on music history, according to Naomi Parry.

“I hope this is the definitive narrative and that it gives her younger audience the opportunity to experience her, because they’re never going to see her on stage,” the stylist told the Guardian.

But the highlight of the exhibition is a reconstruction of the London Metropolis studio where Amy Winehouse recorded her second and last album, “Back to Black.”

This installation, created by artist Chiara Stephenson, is composed of several rooms dedicated to the music and the multiple influences of the singer.

“Amy: Beyond the Stage” will be on display from November 26 at the Design Museum in London.

Until then, Amy Winehouse fans can visit 171 Camden High Street until September 28 to discover a mural specially created by Studio Moross in advance of the exhibition.
