This year, many appear to be keeping those plans closer to home, if recent accommodation search trends from Agoda are any indication.
The rankings, based on searches made between April 1 and 29 for stays from May 15-June 15, reflect the kinds of holidays families are gravitating towards this season: easy city staycations, heritage escapes, nature retreats and laid-back coastal getaways.
Here are the top five destinations.
1. Kuala Lumpur: The easy city staycation
Kuala Lumpur tops the list, with accommodation searches rising 45% compared to the same period last year. For many families, the capital remains an easy choice for a quick getaway without the hassle of long-distance travel.
With shopping malls, theme parks, cafés, museums and entertainment hubs all within easy reach, the city offers something for every age group.
From exploring interactive attractions and kid-friendly activities to indulging in late-night supper spots and retail therapy, KL – particularly hotspots like Petaling Street – continues to appeal to those looking for convenience and variety in one destination.
2. Penang: A favourite for food and culture

Penang ranks second, recording a 41% increase in accommodation searches year-on-year.
Long celebrated for its vibrant food scene and heritage charm, the island continues to draw families seeking a holiday that blends culture, history and good eating.
Beyond its famous hawker fare, Penang offers heritage streets, colourful murals, museums, beaches and family attractions that make it ideal for multi-generational trips.
Its enduring popularity suggests that Malaysian travellers still value destinations that feel both familiar and endlessly discoverable.
3. Cameron Highlands: A refreshing retreat

Cameron Highlands comes in third, with accommodation searches surging 96% compared to the previous year.
Known for its cool climate, rolling tea plantations and slower pace of life, the highland destination remains a favourite escape from Malaysia’s heat and busy cities.
Families heading there can enjoy everything from strawberry farms and fresh produce markets, to jungle trails and scenic cafés overlooking lush greenery.
The significant rise in interest also points to a growing appetite for quieter, nature-driven holidays during the school break.
4. Melaka: The classic heritage escape

Melaka ranks fourth, recording a 61% increase in accommodation searches compared to last year.
A long-time favourite for weekend getaways, the historic city continues to attract families with its blend of heritage sites, riverside cafés, museums and vibrant street food.
Its compact, walkable attractions make it especially appealing for short family trips, allowing visitors to soak in culture, history and local flavours at a relaxed pace.
5. Port Dickson: The beach getaway gaining momentum

Port Dickson rounds out the top five by recording the strongest growth, with accommodation searches jumping 130% year-on-year.
Its growing appeal reflects continued demand for easy beachside escapes that do not require extensive planning or travel time.
With sandy shores, seaside resorts and laid-back coastal charm, Port Dickson remains a reliable choice for families looking to slow down, recharge, and spend quality time together during the school holidays.
