Mohd Hadi Rusli @ Awang, 37, from Kampung Berangan Pak Ayu in Bukit Payung here, told Bernama that he began custom-making his own arrows owing to compatibility issues, as he found it difficult to obtain those that met his specifications.
Over time, word about his craftsmanship spread and captured the attention of fellow archers, who enquired about made-to-order arrows.
“I started taking orders five months ago. While the demand has not been overwhelming, I can only produce three to four dozen arrows a month,” he said.
Hadi’s arrows sell for between RM350 and RM400 per set of 12, depending on the type of wood used. Common wood types include pine and cedar, which are hardy and lightweight, making the arrows more durable and less prone to breakage.
He explained that he also prefers pine as it is easier to source in shops in Terengganu, and is reasonably priced.
“Making arrows involves several stages, including splitting the wood, planing and painting it,” he said.

He added the most difficult part of the process is shaping the round arrow shaft to a diameter of between 7.5mm and 9mm.
Hadi reckons there are only about 10 traditional bow-and-arrow makers in Terengganu who carry out the craft full-time or for side income.
