KUALA TERENGGANU:
Seasoned lawyer Victor Isaacs is proving that age is no barrier to learning – after six years of hard work, the 85-year-old has earned his doctor of philosophy (PhD) from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA).

His thesis focuses on the role of professionals in drafting laws related to euthanasia in Malaysia – a topic that proved to be one of his greatest academic challenges, as it addresses a sensitive issue intertwining legal and medical ethics.

“I recommended that UniSZA set up a palliative care home on campus to support terminally ill patients who no longer receive treatment at hospitals,” the father of four told reporters after his convocation ceremony recently.

He acknowledged that while age has been challenge throughout his academic journey, he never allowed it to stop him from pursuing his studies – not even when he lost his wife six years ago.

“Knowledge has always been part of who I am. Losing my wife was heartbreaking, but it only strengthened my resolve to keep learning,” he said.

Meanwhile, another graduand, 59-year-old Zamri Chik, is preparing to pursue his PhD for the third time, having previously completed two doctorates in education.

A former research officer at the Terengganu Strategic & Integrity Institute, Zamri is driven by his passion for helping students and researchers locally and worldwide – particularly in Terengganu, Jordan, Nigeria, and Palestine.

He told Bernama that his academic journey, while challenging, has only deepened his love for learning.

“Starting my first PhD was difficult, but I found it easier with the second one. Now, as I prepare for my third doctorate in political science, I feel confident as I understand the process,” he said.

Isaacs’s and Zamri’s achievements are an inspiring reminder that perseverance and dedication can help one overcome hardships, no matter how late in life.
