Cheah began learning music when he was seven under the guidance of his teacher, Chin Hon Min, who is also visually impaired. After 17 years of honing his skills, Cheah has achieved Grade Eight certification in piano and keyboard.
The younger of two said he has consistently received strong support from his parents and sister, which enabled him to receive an award at an international-level competition held in his hometown last year.
“In July, the Asia Arts Festival – a significant event in China – was held in Ipoh as it was Visit Perak Year,” he recalled. “I felt so proud because, for the first time, I received an award.
“I won gold, and that has encouraged me to keep moving forward.”
To that end, Cheah will be performing at a charity dinner organised by Pertubuhan Nala Duta Nusantara Malaysia (PNNM) on Oct 10 at Exquisite Seafood Restaurant in Bercham here.
Cheah said he plans to perform at least five songs that evening on the keyboard.
According to PNNM national deputy president Song Chin Eng, the dinner is aimed at raising funds to build a centre for persons with disabilities that will provide training to empower them and transform their future.
The charity dinner will also feature musical performances by other persons with disabilities, as well as a magic show.
Further information will be posted on the PNNM Perak Women’s Group Facebook page.
