KUALA LUMPUR:
A local hair salon chain has made the cut into the Guinness World Records, after successfully completing the most haircuts ever by a team in one hour.

At the “Cut for Love” event on Aug 27, a team of 140 APT Salon hairstylists delivered 325 haircuts in just 60 minutes at the Main Atrium of Sunway Velocity Mall.

The feat was verified by Guinness World Records adjudicator Austin Johnson.

APT Salon also pledged RM50 for every member of the public who participated in the haircut challenge to two cancer-related organisations, namely the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) and the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA).

“We believe that even a simple haircut can carry deep meaning. Through this record-breaking event, we’re showing the world what Malaysians can achieve with unity, purpose, and heart. It’s not just about cutting hair – it’s about cutting for hope,” said APT Salon CEO Vincent Teh.

Hundreds of Malaysians from all walks of life, including children and people in their 70s, turned up for the occasion, eager for a free haircut while supporting a good cause.

Hair donations collected during the event will go towards making wigs for breast cancer patients undergoing treatment.

APT Salon also ran separate promotions for customers to add to the fundraising total.

Teams from NCSM and BCWA Malaysia were also present on site to provide free cancer screenings and clinical breast examinations respectively to members of the public.

BCWA assistant general manager Sumitra Selvaraj said their community outreach nurses conducted 70 free clinical breast examinations at the event, resulting in one suspicious finding. The woman involved was advised to follow up with further screening.

“The event is a perfect example of how a collaboration helps sustain our not-for-profit operations, and we are deeply grateful to APT Salon for supporting the work that we do,” Sumitra told FMT Lifestyle.

The “Cut For Love” event also featured makeover sessions for cancer survivors from Pink Unity, NCSM’s survivor support group, and from BCWA Malaysia.

At the end of the day, cheers filled the air when it was announced that APT Salon had indeed set a new Guinness World Record. A cheque for RM18,400 was presented to representatives from NCSM and BCWA.

“This is more than a milestone for APT. It’s a moment for Malaysia. ‘Cut for Love’ was our way of reminding the world that even the simplest act — a haircut — can carry immense power when done with purpose and unity,” Teh told FMT Lifestyle.

“We wanted to show that Malaysians can create a global impact from our own soil. And today, we did just that — not with celebrity or wealth, but with connection, craft, and community,” Teh added.
