IPOH:
For Masaud Mansor, the Mercedes-Benz Model 115 E Series once owned by his late father is more than just a car. It is a cherished family heirloom – a symbol of love, memories, and the bond he shared with his old man.

Besides its obvious historical value, Masaud, 62, views it as his father’s legacy – something he is determined to preserve for generations to come. Half a century later, the car is still roadworthy.

“My father bought it directly from Germany in 1975. After his passing, I took on the responsibility of maintaining it, and it’s been with me since 1990,” he said, speaking at the Mercedes Classic Merdeka Convoy at SMK Layang-Layang Kiri here recently.

Masaud’s own love for the Mercedes-Benz runs deep. He owns 13 other such cars, including the W129, W116, W124, W126, and the iconic SLR 129.

Born and raised in Lekir, Manjung, he has cultivated strong relationships with expert mechanics in this part of Perak who are “familiar with the intricacies of these classic engines”, making car maintenance a breeze.

He added that spare parts are never an issue thanks to the network of fellow Mercedes enthusiasts and owners who help one another out.

Maintaining these cars, he noted, is very similar to caring for a new vehicle. “The main difference is that modern cars rely more on electronics, while these older models are more mechanical and easier to manage.”

Masaud, who is the adviser of the Perak Mercedes-Benz Motor Recreation Club (GPMP), said this hands-on approach is part of the charm of this make of car. The other appeal is the enduring quality of German engineering, “from the strong suspension system to the engine’s durability – the cars remain comfortable, reliable, and relevant even today”.

While the cost of maintaining such a collection can be rather steep, he doesn’t mind: Masaud said he spends RM3,000-RM4,000 a month on upkeep alone. “But it’s a hobby that brings me peace, so it doesn’t feel like a burden.”

Meanwhile, GPMP president Yusri Yakub said the convey, organised in collaboration with Yayasan Ikhtiar Parit, brought together more than 68 classic Mercedes-Benz cars to mark the country’s 68th Merdeka anniversary.

The 78km-long convoy visited various locations within the constituency “to deepen the public’s understanding of independence and foster a sense of patriotism”.

He added: “It isn’t only about showcasing classic vehicles; it’s about inspiring the spirit of Merdeka in everyone, especially students. We hope this initiative will help build excitement as we approach Merdeka celebrations on Aug 31.”
