KUALA LUMPUR:
Che Saad Nordin has never been one to let age dim his spirit for cycling around peninsular Malaysia in a show of patriotism every year during Merdeka Day celebrations.

Starting his solo mission this year on July 26 from Sanglang in Perlis, the 76-year-old has already cycled through Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.

This year marks the 11th time the former Bernama stringer has embarked on his cycling expedition. Sometimes riding solo, at other times in groups, he averages 70-80km each day.

He is expected to be in Melaka on Aug 31 to join National Day celebrations there before cycling on to his next destination.

When contacted by Bernama, Che Saad, who is from Baling, Kedah, said he chose cycling to deliver his message of patriotism as it allows him to connect directly with the community during his many pit stops.

He said he often stops at schools to meet with students there and at other locations along his route to distribute Jalur Gemilang flags. To date, he has presented over 1,000 flags to those he has met.

“I want everyone who sees me cycling at my age, while carrying the flag, to remember the sacrifices of our national heroes, especially those who perished during the Emergency from 1948 until after independence,” he said.

“I still remember, as a teenager in Baling, passing through areas where battles were fought against communist insurgents. I have even seen, with my own eyes, the bodies of our fallen national heroes.

“That memory continues to fuel my spirit to this day. Many rarely speak of their contributions anymore, so I hope that, in this way, the message gets across.”

Recalling his experiences while cycling, Che Saad said locals often welcome him with open arms when they spot him in their area.

“Some have accompanied me for several km, while others have invited me to their homes for a drink and a short rest. Those are the moments that make me feel accepted and appreciated during my rides,” he said.

Sharing his secret to staying energetic in his golden years, this grandfather of nine said he maintains a healthy diet, reduces his sugar intake, and cycles every day to keep fit – a regimen he has observed for decades.

“On every ride, I recite zikir (remembrance of God) to calm my heart; and along the way, meeting old and new friends becomes a natural booster for me to keep going,” he said.

Asked how long he intends to continue his Merdeka Day rides, Che Saad said he will keep cycling for as long as his health permits.
