SUBANG JAYA:
If you had a time machine, where would you go? Ancient Egypt’s golden age? The groovy days of Woodstock?

At Shimokita Space, you don’t need to imagine. You’ll be instantly transported to retro Japan, complete with boxy television sets, nostalgic video game consoles, and even a classroom that looks like it’s straight out of a manga.

This quirky café-slash-vintage-thrift-store is inspired by Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa neighbourhood, famous for its secondhand shops and indie vibe.

Shimokita Space is tucked away on the top floor of a row of SS15 shoplots in Subang Jaya. Once you spot the right staircase, just follow the wall lined with vintage Japanese posters. Pass through the silver party tinsel hanging from the ceiling and you’ve arrived.

Step inside and it’s a cross between an old-school Japanese arcade and someone’s cosy living room.

There’s a comfy sofa with an anime-print throw blanket, two TVs looping old Japanese ads, an arcade machine, and a red glow from retro lights setting the mood.

Shimokita Space is an Instagrammer’s dream, filled with nostalgic gems like a typewriter, vinyl player, rotary phone, and a playable retro console. The curated thrift section offers stylish picks – from jewellery to jackets – though prices are a tad higher than usual.

As for the food menu, it is short and simple: burgers, fries, nuggets, and drummettes. The drinks list is a bit longer, with coffee, tea, sodas, and their signature butter biru – yep, their own version of butterbeer.

The classic beef smashburger is a definite winner. This no-frills, juicy burger comes in three sizes. The beef patty is nicely charred on the outside and tender inside, thanks to the smash technique. Caramelised onions add sweetness, and the house-made sauce brings it all together. The best part? The triple stack costs just RM15.

Also worth a bite is the Shimokita spicy chicken burger – thick, juicy, and perfectly crispy. The golden batter packs a satisfying crunch, while the slow-building spice and creamy house sauce make each bite a fiery, finger-licking delight.

As for the butter biru, it’s likely inspired by the butterbeer from Harry Potter – a creamy, sweet butterscotch soda topped with a frothy, buttery foam. Pro tip: don’t stir it. Sip it as is – foam and all – and you might just find yourself at the Three Broomsticks Inn in Hogsmeade.

So, whether you’re here for the retro vibes, the comfort food, or just a quirky spot to hang out with friends, Shimokita Space delivers on all fronts. It’s a playful trip down memory lane, wrapped in nostalgia, neon lights, and delicious bites.
