Theatre dance show explores being seen in today’s world

'will you be my witness' hopes to uncover what it means to be known and acknowledged, particularly in this day and age of social media.

PETALING JAYA:
If there is no one to witness the span of your life, did you even exist? A philosophical quandary, and one that has been asked another way: if a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?

This question is arguably more relevant today, when one’s social media presence often gives life meaning. For Sarawak-born director Low Yee Choy, this is the central idea behind his theatrical-dance production “will you be my witness?”.

“People find observers and validation through social media, in the amount of ‘likes’ they get. That’s the world we’re living in – but does that make it wrong?” asked the performing arts diploma graduate.

“will you be my witness?” features a stellar troupe of dancers: James Kan, Amirah Redza, Lee Si Jin, Alisya Razman, Hang Wen Chin, and Wong Sek Li (Xue Li).

It is produced under theatre collective “lowercase laboratories”, and choreographed by award-winning dancer and choreographer Kenny Shim.

Low, 25, describes the show as a genre-blurring performance that follows six characters as they seek out genuine connection in a hyperconnected world – where being seen doesn’t always mean being known.

One of his key inspirations was “Koyaanisqatsi”, a 1982 experimental film that uses sound, stock footage, and time-lapse imagery to explore how technology and modern living have disrupted the natural world and human connection.

Bringing those themes to life through movement, “will you be my witness?” marks Low’s first venture into dance.

“This production’s standpoint is that social media disconnects us more, although it was created to do the opposite,” he concluded.
