KUALA LUMPUR: With its witty lyrics and catchy melody, Douglas Lim’s new song “Aidilfitri di Malaysia” is both entertaining and a subtle reflection of unity in the country.
As of press time, the lighthearted song, which was released on March 20, has racked up over 400,000 views on YouTube and more than 21,000 “likes” on the comedian’s Instagram.
Lim, who is credited with writing the music and lyrics, said his main goal in creating the video was to extend Hari Raya greetings to the Malay community while adding to the festive spirit of the season.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the process of composing this song, especially brainstorming and exchanging ideas with friends from different backgrounds. This song is also a tribute to the classic Raya songs that are well-loved,” he told Bernama.
The 47-year-old believes the spirit of unity is ingrained in Malaysians, making them naturally resonate with music videos that showcase diversity.
“To me, unity in Malaysia comes naturally because we constantly interact with friends of different races at work, shopping malls, and eateries.
“It’s just that sometimes, misunderstandings between races receive more attention in the news, even though these are often minor issues,” said Lim, who is joined by Murty and Chelsia Ng as his duet partners.
Asked about the challenge of balancing entertainment and elements of unity and harmony in a music video, the actor said it all came about organically.
“This was just a fun project with my friends. It appears to highlight unity primarily because the singers come from different backgrounds, including Malay friends living abroad.
“I’m simply showcasing the reality of Malaysia, where diversity naturally exists,” he stressed.
Lim hopes the song will ignite the festive spirit of Aidilfitri among Malays and non-Malays alike, and encourage more people to appreciate and take part in the celebration.
“I didn’t necessarily set out to create a song about unity, but after reading the comments and feedback, I’m happy many people feel that warmth,” he said. “This is our country, where people of all races come together to celebrate Raya.”
