In Malaysia, watching a wayang kulit performance usually requires visiting a local cultural centre or travelling to the east coast. But this weekend, Klang Valley residents can enjoy this timeless spectacle of shadows at Sunway University, as it hosts the Waye Kito: Wayang Kulit Kelantan Festival.
Visitors can enjoy appearances from veteran performing troupes from Kelantan and KL, namely Wayang Kulit Sri Campuran, Warisan Merak Mas, Akademi Arjunasukma, and Baizam Generation. Don’t miss the distinctive style of wayang kulit Kelantan from Tumpat, Pasir Mas and Bachok.
Also gracing the event will be puppet makers Mohammad Azran Che Aziz, and Aaren Kang Xiao Ren of Persatuan Wayang Kulit Sri Cindayu. Other highlights include an exhibition of traditional puppets, as well as workshops on puppet making and traditional music.
In addition, make sure you check out the Wayang Kulit Living Legacy Exhibition, organised by the Sunway Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage. Held this weekend as well as from April 8-23, it showcases Malaysian shadow-puppetry traditions, and offers immersive displays featuring vertical-reality (VR) experiences and hands-on workshop opportunities.
The Waye Kito festival is held in conjunction with an application from the tourism, arts and culture ministry to have wayang kulit added to the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Admission to the festival is free. Follow Waye Kito on Facebook and Instagram.
