SHAH ALAM:
You’re having a special night at home – the candles are flickering, the steaks are sizzling and a perfectly chilled bottle of wine awaits.

As you sit down to your meal, you catch your dog watching you with eager eyes, making you wonder if your furry friend would like to join the fun.

Thanks to Pawsome Brewery, they can! The business offers a unique range of pet-friendly “beverages” such as “Bark Ale”, “Bark Ale Pilsner”, “Sake”, “Malbark” and even “Dog Pérignon”.

If you’re concerned about alcohol, rest assured as these drinks contain none. Instead, the products are made with either chicken or fish broth along with fruits and vegetables.

“They do not contain any seasoning, preservatives and artificial colouring. They are also non-carbonated,” said Stephanie Chan, the co-founder of Pawsome Brewery.

Additionally, the products are free from harmful ingredients for dogs such as chocolate, grapes and onions. Chan shared that while customers have mainly bought the products for their dogs, these beverages can also be enjoyed by cats.

Chan crafted the products to resemble actual alcoholic beverages. For instance, both the “Bark Ale” and “Bark Ale Pilsner” look like beer, with the yellow tint of “Bark Ale” coming from turmeric and the golden hue of “Bark Ale Pilsner” from honey.

Meanwhile, the pinkish hue of “Dog Pérignon”, a playful nod to Dom Pérignon champagne, and the reddish tone of “Malbark”, inspired by Malbec wine, both come from dragon fruit. As for the “Sake”, its slight greenish hue is derived from Japanese seaweed.

“I like to make things very realistic,” she shared, adding that she also personally designed the labels.

Each bottle, she said, is freshly made upon order. If kept chilled, it has a shelf life of three weeks. She also advised against freezing as the glass bottles could break.

“If customers can’t finish the bottle, they should pour the remainder into an ice cube tray and freeze it,” she suggested, adding that once frozen, the shelf life extends from three to four months. These frozen treats are also perfect for keeping your pooch cool on a scorching day.

Hygiene, she emphasised, is a priority during production and she ensures that all bottles are thoroughly sanitised. She also uses fruit and vegetable wash to thoroughly clean all the raw ingredients.

Chan recommended using their products to supplement a pet’s diet. After all, chicken or fish broth, vegetables and fruits are rich in nutrients and vitamins.

“For senior dogs who can’t chew on kibbles, our products can be added to soften the kibbles,” she said.

Reflecting on this business venture, Chan shared that the inspiration for Pawsome Brewery came from her beloved golden retriever, Skippy.

Chan and her husband, Herbie Tan, both wine enthusiasts, were planning to travel to Bordeaux, France for a wine tour in 2022.

Before the trip, they wanted to make Skippy’s birthday celebration extra special. After some research, Chan came up with “Bark Ale” and “Malbark” for the occasion.

So, although Skippy couldn’t join them on their overseas trip, the dog still had a tail-wagging good time at home!

“The first batch was just a trial for her party. Then, my friends went crazy and said, ‘you should sell this because it’s so cute and people would buy it’,” she recalled.

Upon their return from France, the couple started Pawsome Brewery – and there has been no turning back.

Last Christmas, inspired once again to create a special treat for Skippy, Chan introduced “Dogolate”.

Although these particular treats resemble chocolates, they are made with peanut butter and carob powder. Naturally, the treats received plenty of positive feedback – something that has truly delighted Chan.

“If my customers’ furkids are happy and they enjoy the products, I’ve achieved something,” she concluded with a smile.
