Temple caretaker Chong Choon Lim, who has dedicated nearly two decades of his life to maintaining the site, said the lanterns are more than just decorative items: they symbolise unity, faith, and the spirit of the community.
“So far, we’ve already hung more than 200 lanterns, and we expect the number to exceed 500 by the time of the celebration (on Jan 29),” the 59-year-old said when met with Bernama early last week.
Chong said he has introduced LED lanterns to give a brighter lighting effect, bringing more colour and cheer to the atmosphere.
He shared that during the festive season, the temple becomes a hub for over 1,000 visitors from within and outside the area, fostering a spirit of togetherness as they offer prayers for blessings and prosperity in the new year.
“Most of the decorations we put up, like the lanterns and flowers, are contributions from the local community. This reflects the spirit of cooperation that remains alive in our society. It also strengthens our bond as everyone plays a role in brightening up the temple,” he added.
As the caretaker, Chong not only looks after the site’s cleanliness; he also ensures the temple continues to offer the tranquillity sought by those who visit.
“To me, this temple is a sanctuary that brings peace to the soul, and I want visitors to feel comfort and serenity when they come here,” he shared. “With more than 500 lanterns lighting up the night sky, this year’s celebration will be even more meaningful.”
He said each illuminating lantern carries hope and prayers for a brighter future, further strengthening kinship within the community as they welcome the New Year.
