PETALING JAYA:
If you’re looking to make a bold and meaningful statement this Chinese New Year, Spirit Animal Co has you covered – literally.

Known for its unique batik fusion designs, this local fashion brand is redefining traditional Chinese attire with a modern Malaysian twist.

From batik cheongsams and unisex tang suits to songket dresses, Spirit Animal Co was one of the first in Malaysia, back in 2021, to modernise and elevate traditional Malaysian fabrics into statement pieces.

The brand is more than just clothing for founder Miki – it’s a way to honour her grandmother’s Nyonya legacy.

Speaking to FMT Lifestyle at her boutique at The Hub in SS2, Miki, a graphic designer by profession, shared how she found her true calling in fashion.

“I was working with my family business in finance before this, but I felt so restricted. My mental health was at its worst during that time.”

The pandemic changed it all. A self-proclaimed fashionista with a love for playing dress-up, she initially launched Spirit Animal Co, reselling items sourced from overseas.

However, it was while participating in a pop-up event in 2020 that inspiration struck. “I wanted to design something special for National Day, so I asked my aunt for help,” she said. Her aunt, now a co-founder of the brand, has over 30 years of tailoring experience.

“I thought, why not try something with batik? So we created a small collection and sold a few pieces,” she explained. The response? “It was overwhelming.”

Today her brand is popular within the region for their batik cheongsams. “I always loved batik. Whenever I travelled abroad, I’d mix and match batik pieces with other outfits. Strangers would compliment me, and it made me realise its potential,” she said.

Her love for batik stems from her childhood. “My granny was Nyonya, so there was always a batik element in her dressing and in our home. She inspired me a lot.”

In fact, during the early days, all of Miki’s products were made using her grandmother’s old sewing machine.

This influence, paired with her aunt’s impeccable craftsmanship, led to Spirit Animal Co’s first big launch in 2021 for Chinese New Year.

This year’s collection is even bolder. The jade-coloured and bright yellow cheongsams with the traditional Mandarin collar are sure to be top picks.

Every piece is handmade by local seamstresses, including women from marginalised communities.

“Some of them are OKU, and single mothers, so this is a means for them to make a living,” she said. By working with local artisans and preserving traditional craftsmanship, the brand advocates for slow fashion.

When asked why she doesn’t outsource production to cheaper alternatives overseas, Miki’s answer was simple: “People ask me this all the time. But I want to keep this ‘Malaysian’ and true to our heritage and culture.

“There are so many beautiful traditional fabrics from different nations, but our batik just excites me. It feels like there are so many stories to tell in the patterns and in the colours, and as a Malaysian, it feels like it’s a part of me.”

Spirit Animal Co’s designs are more than just beautiful – they’re versatile and timeless.

“Batik is often seen as old school, something worn only during festive seasons like Hari Raya,” Miki shared. But her goal was to transform this perception, infusing batik with modern designs to make it something anyone can wear every day.

Her collections include stylish slip dresses, co-ord sets, and loose-fit buttoned shirts with matching shorts – perfect for an elegant dinner or relaxing by the beach.

The appeal of Spirit Animal Co isn’t limited to Malaysia. Miki shared with excitement that their pieces have gained popularity in Singapore, Thailand and even France.

So, this festive season, why not swap the usual for something a little more meaningful? With Spirit Animal Co, you’re not just wearing clothes; you’re celebrating a legacy.
