PETALING JAYA:
No stranger to the local music industry, singer-songwriter Mimi Fly’s latest release “Angkat”, which incorporates sign language in the choreography, has won a place in the hearts of fans.

Yet, despite having received praise and positive feedback, the 38-year-old has been the subject of criticism, including allegations of having exploited sign language for commercial gain.

“Some accuse me of trying to profit from sign language and the sentiments of people with disabilities (PwD). They have misinterpreted my intentions in producing this work,” she told FMT.

The former member of the group One Nation Emcees explained that she has a kinship with PwD, as her mother, Ramlah Md Jallee, was born without legs.

As such, she said her efforts to connect with the disabled are in tribute to her mum, who actively fights for the rights and welfare of the blind, deaf and mute.

“Even though she is disabled, Mama is a scriptwriter and author. She studied at the University of Chicago. She is extraordinary,” the artiste, real name Shamimi Amalina Norhisham, said proudly.

Mimi says she has received positive feedback from PwD who appreciate her efforts to use sign language in her ‘Angkat’ music video.

Having been part of the entertainment industry for over 12 years, Mimi has learnt to take criticism in stride. “When we create something, we cannot expect everyone to like us. There will always be someone who won’t like it,” she said.

Paradoxically, only then can she view her work as “perfect”, she added.

Nevertheless, Mimi aims for inclusivity in her projects, saying she gains satisfaction from all parties being able to enjoy her work together.

“That’s why I used sign language in my choreography. I felt it was appropriate as my dream was to include everyone, including the hearing impaired.”

On the making of the music video for “Angkat”, Mimi shared that despite challenges with the location, weather, talent selection and budget, it was successfully completed within 18 hours.

“As an indie artiste, we have to do everything ourselves,” she noted, “but when we work with people who share the same creative interests, the work becomes easy.”

She said she collaborated with at least 30 others on this project.

“Angkat” – which samples the song “Angkat Kaki” by Sheeda, with rap lyrics by Mimi – was launched on Dec 28 and has received more than a million views on YouTube.
