Announced by the HDMI Forum, this new standard doubles the maximum bandwidth from 48 to 96 Gbps. HDMI 2.2 will also support higher resolutions and refresh rates, such as 4K at 480 Hz, 8K at 240 Hz and 12K at 120 Hz, meeting the future needs of more demanding display and gaming technologies.
HDMI 2.2 therefore paves the way for significant future advances in image quality and fluidity, particularly for video games and the very high-resolution content that will be available in the years to come.
HDMI 2.2 specifications will be made available to manufacturers in the first half of 2025, but users will have longer to wait before compatible hardware comes to the market (TVs, game consoles, home cinema systems, etc.).
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) was created in 2002 by a consortium of electronics manufacturers including Panasonic and Sony. Its aim is to simplify the simultaneous transmission of high-quality digital audio and video signals via a single cable.
This year’s CES runs until Jan 10, 2025, in Las Vegas.
