Grossing US$5 million in this year’s Christmas week, “Wicked” achieved the biggest weekly gross ever for a Broadway show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It was a special week for the famous musical, which ran nine performances instead of the usual eight, setting another record since its opening night in 2003.
In concrete terms, the cult musical grossed an additional US$2 million over the previous week. According to THR, the average ticket price for “Wicked” on Broadway was US$290.
While the release of Jon Chu’s feature-length film has certainly given the musical a popularity boost, the festive season is traditionally a good time for musicals.
Indeed, “Wicked” is not the only musical to offer nine performances before moving into 2025. “The Lion King” (US$4.2 million), “Aladdin” (US$2.81 million) and “The Great Gatsby” (US$2.62 million) also saw their grosses rise.
Meanwhile, despite offering one less performance than the others, “Hamilton” still achieved the third-highest gross of the week, taking US$2.93 million.
This year’s holiday week grosses jumped by almost 23% compared to the same period last year.
Overall, the 2024-25 season has so far posted growth of over 16% compared to the previous season, and grosses are expected to rise further when the holiday season concludes.
