The 48-year-old mother of one is collaborating with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and will embark from Kuala Lumpur in April on her WM ES250i scooter. She is expected to finish her adventure in Saudi Arabia in August.
“If I have the opportunity, I will visit the headquarters of the World Health Organization in Geneva, as well as cancer centres in the countries I visit,” she said at the launch of the NCSM cancer support centre here on Saturday.
“My goal is to gather as much funds as possible to help cancer patients with their treatment, where contributions can be channelled via NCSM.”
Sarlinawati, who was diagnosed in 2021, undertook a solo motorcycle journey around peninsular Malaysia last year to raise funds for the Bra Prosthesis and Mastectomy project organised by Cancer Survivor Malaysia.
She now hopes her upcoming effort can lighten the burden of cancer patients in the country.
“My hobby of riding a motorcycle and the experience of my first solo journey last year for almost 22 days have provided me with a lot of inspiration,” she shared.
“When I ride, it is like continuing life. A cancer patient has to keep on going no matter the circumstances. Whatever obstacles are in front of me, I have to continue.”
At the launch, NCSM managing director Dr M Murallitharan said the cancer support centre – the first to be built in Johor – is expected to begin operations in March and can accommodate up to 300 patients.
It will provide cancer screenings and early detection, as well as services by experts in fields such as psychology, nutrition, counselling and peer support.
