PETALING JAYA:
There’s something magical about the beautiful harmonies of a Christmas choir. Listening to songs of the season, performed by human voices singing as one, can bring joy to the heart.

This year, the Philharmonic Society of Selangor invites everyone to enjoy a heart-warming and foot-tapping celebration of Yuletide music, with their show “Holly Jolly Holidays: Songs for the Season Charity Concert”.

Established in 1958, the Philharmonic Society of Selangor – better known as “the Phil” – is the oldest performing-arts society in Malaysia. Its members are Malaysians from all walks of life, united by a love of music and singing.

Over the past six decades, proceeds from its productions have been donated to various charitable organisations around the country. This year, the Christmas concert is aimed at raising funds for the National Autism Society of Malaysia (Nasom).

“Holly Jolly Holidays” will see an almost 70-person-strong choir perform festive favourites accompanied by a live band, with dance stylings by the Sayang Dancers, choreographed by Farah Sulaiman.

Expect Christmas bangers such as “All that Holiday Stuff”, “Sleigh Ride”, “Midwinter Snow”, “Nutcracker Jingles”, and “Welcome Now the Holidays”. Two shows (Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 3pm) will also feature the Nasom Maestros as the opening act.

One musical number to look forward to is the “Jolly Jingling Carol Medley”, a lively mix of evergreen holiday favourites including “Here We Come A-Caroling”, “Jingle Bells”, “Deck The Halls”, and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

Another concert highlight is “Sing”, a stirring pop anthem by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and singer-songwriter Gary Barlow, which explores themes of togetherness and hope.

“One of our favourite lines from the song says it all: ‘Some words they can’t be spoken, only sung’,” Philharmonic Society of Selangor chairperson Brenda James told FMT Lifestyle.

“It’s a powerful reminder of the unifying magic of music.”

She said her hope is for everyone who attends the show to leave with a warm heart, knowing they have contributed to a meaningful cause by supporting Nasom.
