From classroom to construction

Taylor’s University’s Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) programme combines knowledge, hands-on training and industry-recognised tools for success.

The institution enables future quantity surveyors to build a strong foundation in a dynamic learning environment.
PETALING JAYA:
As Malaysia’s construction industry grows, so does the need for skilled, adaptable quantity surveyors.

Taylor’s University, as the top-ranked private university in Malaysia and Southeast Asia for Architecture & Built Environment in the 2024 QS Subject Rankings, is meeting this demand with its Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) programme.

This programme offers students a solid mix of academic knowledge, hands-on experience, digital skills, and ethical grounding. Graduates like Michelle Tiong and Isaac Hee have used this foundation to build successful and meaningful careers in the field.

Industry-focused

The Bachelor of Quantity Surveying programme is known for its industry-relevant curriculum. Over the 3.5-year course, students build essential skills in cost estimation, procurement, project management, and contract administration.

Both Tiong and Hee credit this thorough preparation with helping them gain confidence and technical expertise.

“The technical foundation I gained is something I rely on daily,” Hee shared.

Tiong added, “The skills I developed, like taking off quantities and managing contracts, have been directly applicable in high-profile projects.”

Bridging theory and practice

A key part of the programme is the six-month industrial training, where students take what they’ve learnt and apply it in real-world settings. This hands-on experience is invaluable, giving them the chance to make industry connections, and get a feel of what their future careers entail.

For Tiong, the training was essential, giving her “comprehensive exposure to industry standards” and a solid head start.

Hee also recalled how the institution’s networking events, internships, and workshops gave him the practical skills and confidence he needed to hit the ground running.

Global recognition and cutting-edge technology

Taylor’s University’s commitment to quality is reflected in its vital industry accreditations from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM), and the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS).

Combined with the university’s focus on industry tools, including Building Information Modelling (BIM) software such as Autodesk Revit, Glodon Cubicost, and RIB Cost X, these accreditations help ensure that graduates are ready to meet the demands of today’s quantity surveying field.

Tiong shared: “Taylor’s accreditation made my path to chartership with RICS much smoother.”

Hee added, “These days, quantity surveyors have to work in a data-driven world, and Taylor’s focus on BIM tools really helped prepare me to succeed in today’s industry.”

Sustainability and professional development

The programme also emphasises sustainable construction, aligning with global environmental goals.

“Quantity surveyors play a key role in sustainable projects,” Tiong noted, explaining that they ensure standards are met while balancing costs.

Graduates start their professional journey as Provisional Members of BQSM, setting them on a structured path to complete registration, as shown by Tiong’s and Hee’s unique career paths.

Impactful careers, inspired by mentorship

Tiong and Hee’s remarkable industry achievements highlight the impact of Taylor’s University in the field of Quantity Surveying.

Tiong has played a vital role in projects like Merdeka 118 and TNB HQ Platinum and is now a Procurement Manager for a significant data centre project.

Hee, on the other hand, has worked on landmark projects like the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and taken on roles in multinational tenders across Vietnam, Australia, and Singapore.

Both credit their success to the mentorship of dedicated academics whose guidance played a significant role in shaping their professional journeys in Quantity Surveying.

Taylor’s University’s Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) programme equips students with real-world skills, global recognition, and a focus on sustainability, creating a solid foundation for a thriving career.
