PETALING JAYA:
Music has been proven to have remarkable effects on people with neurodegenerative conditions. It taps into neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections.

When guided by a board-certified music therapist, music-based interventions can effectively slow cognitive decline, promote rehabilitation, and support the creation of new neural pathways, which are essential for individuals with dementia.

With this in mind, Sunway University, Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia (ADFM), and ZAG Studios have joined forces to organise “Reach Alzheimer’s With Kindness” (RAWK 4.0), a charity concert celebrating the power of music in dementia care.

Supported by the tourism, arts and culture ministry, the event on Sunday aims to bring hope and awareness to individuals and families affected by dementia across Malaysia.

The project kicked off after board-certified music therapist and licensed counsellor Sandra Cheah was approached by Matthew Durai, founder of local podcast creators ZAG Studios. Inspired by his mother’s own experiences with dementia, Matthew mooted the idea for a benefit concert.

“We want to raise awareness about dementia and show how music can do more than just entertain,” said Cheah, who is also president of the Malaysian Music Therapy Association. “We want to educate the public, caregivers, and healthcare professionals on how music can improve quality of life, and support rehabilitation for people with dementia and others with complex needs.

“Another key aim is to increase recognition for music therapy, normalising it as a valid form of therapy in Malaysia,” she added.

RAWK will feature a special immersive experience and stirring performances by musicians from Sunway University, the Earth Tone Music Academy, and dance crew GONE from the Sunway University Dance Club.

Others include Renee and Rachelle, a pair of Latin dancers aged 12 and 10, respectively; spirited singing seniors The Evergreen Quins; and Mori Katsunori and Ng Hua, two individuals living with dementia who will take to the stage to perform beloved classics.

Many of the performances will be intergenerational, demonstrating how music can bring people together across different ages, experiences and backgrounds.

RAWK 4.0 will also showcase original songs composed by Cheah, which reflect the emotional journeys of those living with dementia.

“Creating these songs was a deeply emotional and fulfilling process. I spent time listening to the stories of individuals living with dementia and their families, understanding their experiences and emotions,” she said.

“Translating these stories into music allowed me to capture their resilience, joy, and struggles. Each song is a tribute to their journey and a way to keep their memories alive through music.”

Proceeds will directly support ADFM’s efforts to provide resources, care and support for people living with dementia and their families across Malaysia.

Cheah concluded: “I hope audience members leave with a deeper understanding of dementia and the powerful role music can play in therapy. I’d like them to feel inspired by the stories and recognise the importance of compassion and creativity in caring for individuals with dementia.”
