GEORGE TOWN:
The vibrant cultures and rich storytelling traditions of Latin America are coming to Malaysian cinemas, with the Latin American Film Festival 2024 set to light up screens in Penang and Kuching.

Movie buffs can enjoy a selection of top films from countries including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia – all completely free of charge.

The festival is organised by the Group of Latin American Embassies in Malaysia and Golden Screen Cinemas.

After a successful run in Kuala Lumpur, the festival will hold its fourth edition in Penang from today (Nov 15) to Sunday at GSC Gurney Plaza. It will then make its debut in Kuching from Nov 29 to Dec 1 at GSC CityONE Megamall.

This year’s lineup showcases a diverse range of genres, from heartwarming comedies to gripping dramas and animations, offering a cinematic window into the soul of Latin America.

Highlights include “Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon” (Peru), an animated tale set in the Amazon rainforest, and “Mi Obra Maestra” (Argentina), a satire on the art world. View the trailer below:

Brazilian Ambassador to Malaysia Ary Quintella, dean of the Latin American embassies group Grulac, said he was impressed by locals’ interest in the festival.

“With its 22nd edition in KL and first-ever screening in Kuching, we are thrilled to expand this celebration of Latin American cinema to new audiences. Each film is a testament to the creativity and spirit of our region,” he said in his opening speech here yesterday.

The festival was officiated by chief minister Chow Kon Yeow last night, with the local consular corps watching the Colombian movie “The Colors of the Mountain”.

Admission to all screenings is free. For a complete schedule and synopses, visit the festival’s Facebook page.
