KUALA LUMPUR:
Lat thanked Malaysians for supporting his work upon receiving his ninth National Arts Award (ASN), saying he was proud of the award as it proved comic artists are recognised as being on equal footing with other practitioners of arts and culture.

“I have been drawing comics for over 50 years, almost 60, for Malaysians of various races and ages. They have been my inspiration all this time.

“Stories from society, current issues, are among the ingredients in my drawings. Thank you very much to all,” he said.

Expressing appreciation to his parents, family, friends and teachers, Lat also acknowledged veteran artists who have served as mentors throughout his career.

“I have been guided by many great artists such as Rejabhad, Raja Hamzah, Alias Kulop, Saidin Yahya and Sulaiman Awang. Some are no longer with us, some I have never met, but I learnt how to draw a lot from them.”

Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofia presented the award to Lat – real name Mohd Nor Khalid – in a ceremony at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. He received RM60,000 in cash, a letter of commendation, a trophy, and a set of national clothes.

He was also granted the status of Guest Artist of the tourism, arts and culture ministry, and received incentives to continue his artwork, including being eligible to receive first-class treatment at government hospitals.

Lat said he doesn’t draw as much these days, but hopes the work he has previously produced will continue to inspire young artists today. He shared that his daily routine involves visiting the Lat House Gallery located in Batu Gajah to meet with visitors.

“I enjoy talking to those who come to appreciate local art, showing them letters from past publishers, and taking them to Kampung Boy’s house,” he said, adding that entry to the gallery is free.
