It’s a scream fest at spooktacular ‘Nights of Fright 10’

Sunway Lagoon's 10th anniversary of its popular horror event ups the ante with 10 delightfully creepy haunted houses.

PETALING JAYA:
The month of October is creeping up, which means the coming of Halloween – the best time of the year to enjoy all things spooky! To commemorate the scary season, why not head down to “Nights of Fright 10” and enjoy some time with ghosts, ghouls, and all things that go bump in the night?

This year’s iteration of Sunway Lagoon’s annual scarefest will feature 10 haunted houses, one haunted theatre, four scare zones, 11 thrill rides and 10 performances.

Speaking at the event launch, Sunway Theme Parks representative Michelle Soong said the “Nights of Fright” event – created and produced by Lynton V Harris and Sunway Lagoon – had grown beyond their wildest dreams.

“This year, for our 10th anniversary, we are pulling out all the stops to make something truly extraordinary. We are not just looking at the scares that defined us; we are also introducing new, heart-pounding attractions that will keep guests trembling through the night,” she said.

“Nights of Fright 10” offers up a boo-tiful buffet of scares for visitors, with many kinds of horror represented here.

Venture into Whitechapel 2888 for a “Jack the Ripper screampunk adventure”, or check out “The Bone Man” – an Eastern-themed horror house based on a sinister character from folklore.

Part of the fun is meeting these fiendishly costumed characters around the park. (Sunway Lagoon Nights of Fright pic)

The “Van Helsing Adventure” pays tribute to classic Hammer horror movies, while “The Freezer” uses strobe lighting and mirrors to evoke a nightmarish journey through a holding facility full of menacing inmates. It’s a disorientating experience, in the best way possible.

Book lovers may enjoy an “Alice in Wonderland”-themed attraction, which uses 3D effects to capture the surreal, dreamlike visions of author Lewis Carroll and illustrator John Tenniel.

If your love of horror is a bit more homegrown, head to the “Pontianaks, Pocongs & Pumpkins” scare zone, and grab a selfie with some local spooks.

One corner of the park pays tribute to the Karak Highway, Malaysia’s most haunted motorway: look for the woman in white, perched atop the attraction!

One highlight here is “Summer Camp Nightmares,” which is inspired by iconic slasher Jason Voorhees and the “Friday the 13th” movies. Most Malaysians have probably never been to a summer camp, but will probably never want to visit one after going through this attraction.

The only activities here seem to be slaughter and decapitation: the campers probably wished they’d just gone to Outward Bound School instead!

Also fun is “Silent Hill,” an attraction based on the popular horror game series. Contrary to its name, there’s nothing silent about this haunted experience at all – in fact, it’s full of screams!

What it does contain is some really inspired, creepy set pieces. One setting requires you to walk through a dimly lit room full of creepy mannequins… but are you sure that’s all they are?

Even you don’t try the rides or haunted houses (although why wouldn’t you?) it’s still a lot of fun to just wander around the park and encounter its scare performers. Expect all sorts of creepy characters, from gorgons of Greek mythology to killer clowns.

Many of their costumes are highly creative, and watching the performers in character is a lot of fun.

All in all, “Nights of Fright 10” offers a nice mix of fear and fun, and is definitely a great way to get into the Halloween spirit. For the best experience, tag along with friends who are easily spooked!
