KUALA LUMPUR:
Last year, local anime fans went mad with excitement after Malaysia was unexpectedly name-checked in the popular series “Jujutsu Kaisen.”

In episode 42, a character (not mentioning who, because of spoilers!), mentioned heading to Malaysia, specifically the beaches of Kuantan, in a poignant speech.

This caused so much buzz, the Pahang state legislative assembly even planned to contact the manga creator Gege Akutami, to hopefully promote the state.

While that character may or may not have made it to Kuantan, “Jujutsu Kaisen” at least, has made it to Kuala Lumpur.

Fans can now immerse themselves in the world of the popular anime at the Animation “Jujutsu Kaisen” exhibition, an immersive display of over 100 exclusive show exhibits, all brought in from Japan.

The exhibition is presented by Moments Experiential by Colony Group in collaboration with Trendic and Incubase Studio, supported by Animangaki, and licensed under Toho and Medialink.

“Jujutsu Kaisen,” which means “Sorcery Battle” in English, tells the story of Yuji Itadori, a boy with tremendous physical strength, who has an average high school life. One day, to save a friend afflicted by a terrible Curse, he eats the finger of a Double-Faced Specter, causing it to now share a body with him.

Yuji is then admitted to the Tokyo Metropolitan Technical High School, an organisation that fights Curses. Guided by the powerful sorcerer Gojo Satoru, he now endeavours to free himself of this Curse.

“Jujutsu Kaisen” has been wildly successful, with its manga selling over 90 million copies worldwide since January 2024. Its anime has won numerous awards, including the Tokyo Anime Award for Animation of the Year in 2022.

Fans will no doubt be enthralled by the exhibition, which features detailed replicas of key series locations and life-size character statues. Pick up a specially designed student card at the entrance, and get ready for a world of fun and excitement.

Highlights include a detailed recreation of the talisman-filled room where Yuji is held by Gojo in Episode 1, and several mirror rooms featuring iconic scenes from the show, displayed prominently on large screens.

Fans will love the animation manuscript section, which features over 100 character-action line drawings and main character settings. Director Sunghoo Park supplies notes and insights of what went into the making of the series.

He explains, for example, how when creating the character Fushiguro’s Domain Expansion, the Chimera Shadow Garden, he deliberately minimised his colour palette and avoided overly flashy effects, to symbolise the incomplete nature of the technique.

Also don’t miss the special photo zones at the end of the exhibition, where fans can take selfies with 1:1 life-size models of popular characters such as Gojo, Yuji, Sukuna and more.

If you’d like to commemorate your trip here, stop by the retail store, which features about 168 items of exclusive merchandise, including lanyards, posters and figures. One highlight are the popular Prison Realm stationery and accessories, only available at the Malaysia exhibition from RM9.90.

Additionally, get some grub with a delicious line-up of “Jujutsu Kaisen” inspired food and drink, created in collaboration with Souled Out Café. Try the Itadori Mango Mint, Toge Yakitori Don, Hanami Tempura Salad, and more.

Die-hard fans however, might want to try the Sukuna Cursed Finger chocolates, a custom-made artisanal chocolate creation made in collaboration with Chocolate Concierge. Talk about finger food: unlike the ones in the series, there’s no danger of incurring Curses with this unconventional treat!

Overall, Animation “Jujutsu Kaisen” Exhibition Malaysia will delight fans of the anime, and provide them with fascinating information on what goes on behind the scenes of their favourite show. For newbies, this is a perfect introduction to this dark and entertaining series.
