PETALING JAYA:
US actor, writer and filmmaker Justin Bratton considers himself an avid traveller. You won’t, however, find him at the popular tourist spots covered by travel sites or blogs.

Instead, Bratton enjoys going off the beaten path. Back in the US, he would take long drives into the desert, to desolate spots offering a thrilling edge. Sometimes, this led to misadventures.

“I’ve been broken down in cars a lot when traveling! I had to run 50 miles into a town to pick up a part for a broken-down Winnebago motor home once. Stuff like that just happens, especially when you’re out that much in the desert!” Bratton told FMT Lifestyle.

This love of adventure made Bratton an ideal host for “Unfading Memoirs,” an upcoming four-part digital series showcasing the beauty and diversity of Malaysia.

Presented by KC Global Media for AXN Asia and Tourism Malaysia, this travelogue production takes viewers on a captivating journey through the country, showcasing its culinary delights, cultural heritage, and outdoor adventure opportunities.

The series features curated user-generated content from different travellers’ perspectives across diverse locations in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sarawak and Sabah.

“Unfading Memoirs” is hosted by Bratton and British actress Selina Lo of “Hellraiser 2022” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” alongside food and travel enthusiast Erwan Heussaff of “Let It Simmer,” and “Survivor Philippines.”

Born in Brownsville, Texas, Bratton has been involved in the Asian entertainment industry for over a decade. His work has been showcased on numerous networks and streaming platforms, including HBO Asia, Netflix, Discovery, and AXN.

Fantasy fans may recognise him from HBO Asia’s “Halfworlds,” while competition junkies may know him as the host of shows such as “Asia’s Got Talent,” “Challenger Battleground” and “Dubai Ultimate Challenge.”

He is currently working on “Surviving Silence,” an upcoming psychological horror film.

Malaysia has a special place in Bratton’s heart: the actor and TV host actually lived in Kuala Lumpur from 2010-2011. He even emceed his first event here!

“We shot ‘The Challenger Battleground’ in Langkawi. I was a producer, so I was there for two months. It was amazing, the people were so nice. I think anyone who has never been to Malaysia will never realise how warm and welcoming everyone here is,” Bratton said.

He added that being involved in “Unfading Memoirs” had been a blast, thanks to its casual, relaxed pace. It also gave him the chance to work with Lo, who he described as “an absolute joy to be around.”

Filming the series took Bratton to iconic spots such as Batu Caves and the KL Tower. While he enjoyed shooting there, it was the spontaneous, unplanned little moments he said he’d remember most fondly. He smiled as he recalled dining at a Kemensah river restaurant.

“You sit on these stools in the river, which just flows by you. And they make you food, which is phenomenal. And then it started to rain, and the water started rising quickly! The current was taking away the tables and chairs, and the staff had to run down the river to save them! That was definitely a memorable moment,” Bratton said.

Another moment that stood out? Trying the infamous sago worms of Sarawak.

“Stood out? Maybe more like crawled out!” Bratton laughed. “When I first heard I was going to eat them, I was like, please, I’d eaten a lot of random stuff before. And then I saw how big they were, and went ‘oh my gosh!’”

Bratton hopes the series will inspire more people to create their own unforgettable travel narratives.

“I think we cover a lot of areas in Malaysia that don’t always get a lot of air time. Hopefully, viewers will enjoy all the moments there with me, Selina and Erwan,” Bratton concluded.

Unfading Memoirs’ can be viewed on AXN Asia’s social media platforms and channels from July 11. And follow Bratton on Instagram.
