PETALING JAYA:
Have you always wanted to see the world? If that goal is a little distant for now, here’s a cute alternative: why not enjoy a staycation at a Norway-inspired chalet in Selangor?

Located in Hulu Langat, the lodges at Lubis Tiny House are named as such thanks to their small and quaint design. They look like they are plucked straight out of the Scandinavian country!

Speaking with FMT Lifestyle, proprietor Zurina Sofian shared that these charming chalets had been inspired by her travels. The 61-year-old, who worked in the insurance industry, had decided to explore Europe upon her retirement.

Visiting Sweden, Denmark and Norway, she fell in love with the simplicity of life there, as well as the unique architecture of their houses.

When she returned to Malaysia, Zurina learnt that her family’s farm had long been overgrown with bushes. She thus decided to give it a makeover and turn it into a farmstay, drawing upon the homes she had seen during her travels.

So, what can visitors expect here? Walk into one of the chalets and you’ll be greeted with a cosy and minimalistic interior. Queen-sized mattresses make up bunk beds that can easily fit four people, and there is access to hot-water showers.

There’s also an open kitchen on the grounds, where you can bring your own ingredients and cook for your family. A barbecue grill is available upon request for no additional charge.

“You can also find a number of restaurants close by, so food is not hard to get around here,” Zurina pointed out.

Furthermore, the adjacent farm has plenty of fruit trees, such as banana, rambutan, mango, mangosteen, and the more unusual nona belanda. Come when the fruits are in season and you’ll get to sample them, too!

For those looking to slake their thirst, the grounds caretaker occasionally offers fresh sugarcane juice.

Weather permitting, guests can frolic in the stream next to the farm, or go for a swim in the adults’ and kids’ pools.

Presently, Zurina and her husband are only running three chalets and the farm, although they plan to add two more lodges in the near future.

Business has been good since she began operations last year, she said, with Lubis Tiny House having seen guests from all over the country.

“For the most part, though, due to our proximity to the city centre, many of our visitors come from Kuala Lumpur,” she noted.

Some of them stay here when they are in the vicinity for an event or taking courses at the learning institute located close by.

And Zurina is pleased to have greeted several returning guests who simply adore the privacy and serenity the 1.2ha piece of land offers.

“I want exclusivity for my guests and their families so they get to enjoy this place by themselves – and even camp out on the grounds if they wish – when they want to be close to nature.”
