PETALING JAYA:
Before her passing last year, Janet Lee achieved her artistic dreams despite living with epilepsy and other developmental disabilities.

This month, the Janet Lee Gallery, which works to honour her legacy by uplifting Malaysia’s underprivileged and disabled artists, joins hands with the Yeoh Foundation for a worthy cause.

On April 18, a charity soiree will be held at the fine-dining restaurant Beta KL to raise funds for underprivileged youth programmes.

Attendees will be treated to exquisite dishes curated by chef Raymond Tham, as well as string quartet and soprano performances by young artistes from around the country.

Themed “A Brush With Kindness”, the event will also pay homage to Lee’s personal and artistic journey through an auction of three of her paintings.

Half of the proceeds will go to the gallery and the other half to the Yeoh Foundation, which was founded in 2021 by lawyer Matthew Yeoh to honour his late father’s philanthropic legacy.

Funds will also be raised via donations and sales of other paintings at the soiree. Depending on the amount contributed, donors will be named and honoured on the event’s social media accounts and materials, in addition to receiving a token of appreciation.

At present, up to 100 tickets are being sold, with confirmed guests including US embassy staff, ambassadors from Vietnam, France and Croatia, as well as Tengku Hishammuddin Zaizi.

High-profile attendees notwithstanding, Yeoh stressed that the priority will be on raising funds for the underprivileged.

“This soiree is dedicated to furthering Janet’s legacy and showing the world the inherent beauty in her paintings,” said Yeoh, himself a collector of Lee’s works.

He said the foundation hopes to raise around RM35,000 through the event.

Ultimately, Yeoh hopes guests will turn their attention to the message contained in Lee’s artworks: that given the opportunity, young Malaysians can truly shine.

Lee’s mother, Joyce Moi, shared that her daughter had believed strongly in gratitude and giving back to society.

“The brand value of Janet Lee Gallery is positivity, which is something Janet had, despite her challenges,” she said at a recent press conference announcing the soiree.

She added that the gallery will always seek to uplift challenged youths. “They definitely cannot do it for themselves, but if they have a positive attitude and determination, people can empower them to achieve their dreams.”
