Dabble in arts and crafts at the Happy Hour Club

This spot offers a variety of arts and crafts like tufting, silver clay painting and pottery painting. And there’s food and drinks too.

PETALING JAYA:
A career in the arts is not feasible for everyone even if they have a genuine interest in it and the people at the Happy Hour Club understand this all too well.

And what exactly is the Happy Hour Club, you ask? Well, it just happens to be Malaysia’s first do-it-yourself experiential café where you can drop by for a cuppa and try your hand at pottery painting if so inclined.

Whether you’re a kid, senior citizen or a thirty-something office worker, this spot offers all sorts of DIY experiences from tufting, silver clay painting and pottery painting, to ceramic painting and more.

Happy Hour Club only began offering ceramic painting a few weeks back, so as to accommodate those who wished to take home their art pieces the same day it was completed.

“We have a lot of foreigners coming over from different countries and they need to travel back maybe within the week so they want to collect their artwork on the same day. For pottery painting, you need to wait for two weeks for the firing process,” said founder Ee Leen Goh, 36.

She said sculpture painting was also introduced recently. Similar to ceramic painting, one can take home their piece immediately after completing it. You can collect it within the same day.

Targeted to children, the sculptures of Ultra-Man and Pikachu are created in-house from high-grade plaster. During the session, kids can paint their figurines and take their work back home the same day.

The “workshops” are intentionally conducted in a non-classroom environment, said Goh. There are no instructors hovering over you. Instead, its community managers are on hand to answer questions you may have about the process. There’s also no limit to how long you can work on your art as long as you can finish it before closing time at 5pm.

Goh said her fascination with arts and crafts began when she was a young girl. She said went to many art classes when growing up in her seaside hometown of Kuantan in Pahang. It was a place where parents would drop off their children for a few hours, letting their kids’ imagination run wild.

As much as Goh loved arts and crafts, she ended up pursuing a career in tech. It was only a year ago when she came full circle, taking on this DIY project that is very close to her heart.

“When we launched this space, we were thinking there would be a lot of introverts and university students. To my surprise, we have a lot of families and corporate people who came here to unwind,” she said.

The café’s biggest message is that taking time off in your hectic day is essential for self-preservation.

“I think it’s very therapeutic. Personally, I used to work in a very stressful environment so, for me, arts and crafts is a means to unwind.

“Before I started this business, I always imagined how nice it would be if I could have a place like this to hang out and just do my own thing. I think what people are looking for is actually a place to relax, unwind, and just be in your own zone and do your own thing,” Goh added.

And if you’re feeling peckish while you work, there’s a wide selection of drinks, and the cafe’s showstopper called croffles that you can indulge in.

Depending on how you’re feeling, the café offers both sweet and savoury variations of this croissant waffle pastry in the flavours of Mentai, Nutella, and Belgian Chocolate.

FMT Lifestyle tried out the classic golden croffle with ice cream. Paired with vanilla ice cream, the croffle was light, airy and oozed maple syrupy goodness.

Whether you’re here for the arts and crafts or the food and beverages, this place’s bright and quirky setting makes for the perfect spot for café-hoppers and art lovers alike.
