PETALING JAYA:
If you’re looking to do something different this weekend, and soak up some arts and culture instead, the We&I Artfest would be a great place to visit.

The annual festival showcases the artistic talents of those in the disabled community, and was officially launched last Sunday in conjunction with International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Dec 3.

This year’s theme “All in Access”, highlights the issues of accessibility and inclusivity in regard to this often-overlooked community in Malaysia.

Officially launched in 2018 by Zuraini Anuar, it is hoped that through this art festival, society at large can better understand, accept and make mindful decisions in regard to the many disabled members of the community.

The We&I Artfest also strives to enable the disabled to become more independent and responsible by enabling them to claim ownership of their talents and skills.

“We hold the event in December every year as it’s in line with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities,” Armani Shahrin, founder of NakSeni, told FMT Lifestyle. NakSeni is the organising partner of We&I Artfest.

“It’s also the birthday month of Izzati, Zuraini’s daughter, the catalyst for the art festival,” Armani added.

Izzati, who was born with autism and Down Syndrome, is among the artists featured in the festival, along with 17 others who are either on the autism spectrum, deaf or wheelchair users.

Armani said that Rumah Insaniah Tun Dr Siti Hasmah was chosen as the venue for the We&I Artfest in recognition of its status as one of the earliest homes established for members of the disabled community.

“Many people don’t know this, so we chose this venue to bring more exposure for them, as well as to allow those in the community to interact with each other.”

Besides the artworks on display, there will be workshops on dance, upcycling, sewing and baking as well as art bazaars, piano and drum performances plus pop up stalls and food vendors aplenty.

Other activity partners in this year’s We&I Artfest are IncluCity, Empathy for Youth, Nurul Sofia Arts, Teeb TV, Nati Arts and more.
