PETALING JAYA:
Singer Lyia Meta, who is more recognised abroad than in Malaysia, is in the running for two film awards at the Cannes World Film Festival.

She joined the race for the grand prize of “best song” and “best singer of the future” based on her singing and acting in the music video she produced and directed.

Meta was the winner of the two categories in August, and the video accompanies the title track of her fourth album “Always You”.

She said she was informed last week the annual award ceremony will take place at Cineum Cannes on the French Riviera in June next year.

The “Luciole d’Or” (Golden Firefly), which epitomises the Cannes World Film Festival, projects emerging talents deserving greater visibility and recognition in movies and music videos, and celebrates established filmmakers.

It is not affiliated in any manner with the highly-popular Festival de Cannes which highlights cinematic excellence, with the Palme d’Or as its symbol.

Meta’s breakthrough in the film fest followed her recognition by US author and jazz critic, Sammy Stein, as one of the world’s top female musicians.

Stein had written a review of “Always You” in a popular US music website, describing Meta as “dynamite and honey, power and sweetness”.

She later included Meta in a listicle of 10 female jazz musicians “you should see and hear more of” in last month’s Readers’ Digest online magazine.

The listicle came as a follow-up to Stein’s recently released book on 21 “Fabulous Female Musicians”.

Meta said: “With the Cannes World Film Festival, the recognition from industry peers and the jury’s validation of my work is indescribable.

“It leaves me feeling deeply honoured and grateful, knowing that my work has resonated with judges on the international stage.”

Meta said she has been inspired by a renewed sense of purpose and passion for her craft, and was indebted to her songwriting collaborator Denise Dimin, co-producer Bob McGilpin, and her husband Zack for their support in the jazz-pop journey.

“What are we and what purpose do we serve if we don’t strive to be better versions of ourselves with each passing day?” said Meta, who has been recognised in a wide range of genres including jazz, blues, pop, and country.

In July, Meta won both best album and best female vocalist awards at the US Global Music Awards, and last year she grabbed the performance of the year and best female vocalist prizes at the Texas Sounds International Country Music Awards.
