To that end, the Papan Heritage Gallery is set to host the Papan Old Town Retro Event this weekend, aimed at highlighting the rich cultural and historical tapestry of this charming former mining town.
“Papan is in the midst of transforming into a heritage tourism hub, and hosting our Malaysia Day celebration here is an opportunity to showcase our town’s rich history and culture,” said Jacky Chew Seng Leong, head of the Papan Heritage Conservation group.
“We aim to offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Malaysia’s pre- and post-independence journey,” he added.
To that end, the second edition of the event will be filled with fun activities such as the Cultural Fun Walk, where participants are encouraged to dress up in nostalgic/retro attire. Step back in time as you explore the sights and surroundings, while taking the opportunity to snap some terrific photos!
Hungry? Visitors can savour mouthwatering childhood kampung treats at various food stalls, and peruse handmade crafts and collectibles by vendors from around the town.

If you’re a car enthusiast, you’ll be in for a treat with the antique car and motorcycle exhibition; while music and arts lovers will be entertained by live bands and performances throughout the two-day festival.
Senior residents – most of whom have lived in Papan for decades – will also be out and about to share captivating stories of yesteryear, while children can participate in a fun colouring contest. In short, there will be something for everyone, young and old!
In addition, the Batu Gajah District Council is organising an eco green market, aimed at promoting sustainability.
Speaking with FMT Lifestyle, Chew pointed out how enthusiastic the community has been in preparing for the festivities. “Hosting such a significant event has generated a great deal of excitement among the residents, as it promises to bring a large number of visitors to Papan,” he said.
“Our hope is that the Papan Old Town Retro Event will highlight the value of heritage and demonstrate how it can breathe new life into a place, providing both enjoyment and a unique experience for visitors.”
