PARIS:
Lately on social networks, a host of posts have been promoting ‘Traptox,’ a surgical procedure that involves injecting Botox into the trapezius muscles.

On TikTok, the #traptox hashtag is sparking serious interest, racking up some 5.7 million views.

The procedure notably went viral thanks to the American reality TV star, Kim Kardashian, after a photograph of her slimmed-down shoulders emerged. She later confessed to having undergone the procedure.

The trapezius muscles, which extend from the base of the neck to the shoulders and upper back, are essential for everyday movements.

They ensure good neck stabilisation and shoulder posture. But, over time, these muscles can become inflamed as a result of strenuous physical effort or poor posture.

That’s why some people resort to Botox, which is known to relax overworked muscles. Injecting Botox into this area of the back can help muscles relax, reduce stiffness in the neck and shoulders, and alleviate pain.

Dr Macrene Alexiades, an American dermatologist, told Byrdie that “using Botox on the traps has proven effective for unforgiving muscle knots and chronic migraines.”

At the same time, ‘Traptox’ helps achieve the effect of a more contoured, elongated ‘swan’ neck and slimmer shoulders. By injecting Botox into this area, the zone relaxes and reduces in size and volume.

On social networking sites, many people are talking about their experience of this procedure, sharing before/after photos, or even videos of the procedure.

In the comments, it appears that ‘Traptox’ is a real hit with some people. Conversely, others view the trend in a more negative light if the sole aim is to comply with new beauty standards: “this is insane Imao sacrificing a whole MUSCLE for the aesthetic!”

The procedure is by no means trivial. Its potential side effects are similar to those encountered with facial Botox injections, ie, redness, slight swelling and bruising.

Moreover, it could have other long-term drawbacks. The American exercise coach, Alicia Jamison, told Health magazine that Botox injections weaken the trapezius, making it difficult to work the muscle in the future.

Botox can also have harmful effects on the body. Indeed, a 2015 study revealed that Botox injections can cause serious side effects.

There are several ways to achieve a more swan-like neck and more streamlined shoulders without surgery.

Experts recommend, for example, using a massage gun or roller to relieve tension in the trapezius. To lengthen the neck, practising good posture on a daily basis is also essential.

Plus, certain physical exercises can help strengthen and tone the trapezius muscles, such as the “Prone W,” which involves laying face down on the floor then lifting your chest off the ground and pulling your elbows down to your hips to form a “W” shape with your arms.
