Slim chance of not being satisfied with Lenovo’s latest Yoga laptop

The Slim 7 Pro X may seem like a regular entry-level to mid-range device but, with prices starting from RM4,980, it offers plenty of bang for your buck.

Lenovo has always delivered slim laptops that do the basics well. Over the years, its Yoga range has evolved to meet the ever-increasing demands of users, resulting in powerful hardware that retains a slim and highly portable profile.

And now, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro X targets content creators who wish to get productive outside of the office. Let’s see how it holds up.

Design

Sleek yet functional describes the all-aluminum build, which carries dual-tone shades very well. The chassis tips the scales at 1.45kg while measuring 15.9mm thin, clearly placing it out of the ultrabook category, which tends to be around 30% lighter.

Still, Slim 7 Pro X is packed with specifications not to be sneezed at. It might not turn any heads at first glance, though those who love the minimalist look might fall in love with its understated design.

Flipping it open, the stiff hinge ensures the screen remains in place at the angle of your choice. It can be opened up to 180°, making this a useful tool for collaborations at the same table.

The port selection on this laptop is an eclectic mix. The left houses a couple of USB Type-Cs (one of them being USB 3.2, while the other supports DisplayPort 1.4a and is PD 3.0 compatible), as well as a USB Type-A port.

On the right are the power button, a USB Type-A port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a physical camera-shutter button to maintain privacy at your convenience. Connectivity options include WiFi 6 and 6E alongside Bluetooth 5.1 standards.

A HDMI port is missing here, which is strange for a laptop aimed at content creators. It is highly recommended you purchase a converter if you wish to connect to a larger external display.

The touchpad is generous in size and emits a comfortable click when pressed. This laptop also comes with Lenovo’s signature curved keycaps, and the keyboard is extremely comfortable to type on – you will not find yourself fatigued after spending an entire day churning out documents.

Being a backlit keyboard, you can work in darkness without fumbling around. Do bear in mind that there is no fingerprint sensor installed.

Display and sound

The 14.5-inch (37cm) IPS panel maxes out at 3K resolution and sports a 120Hz refresh rate (that’s 3072 x 1920 pixels, if you were wondering). The display is capable of reaching 400 nits, making it usable outdoors; though if you were seated with light falling on the reflective glass cover, visibility drops somewhat while still being manageable.

The ambient-light sensor works, though it can get iffy at times. There are moments when the display drops the brightness level a few notches on its own even with nothing covering the sensor. This tended to occur while gaming, so it could be a software issue.

Lenovo claims the Yoga Slim 7 Pro X has 100% sRGB coverage and hardware-calibrated colour accuracy rated at Delta E < 1. What this means is, it should be sufficient for the budding or even seasoned content creator, although professionals might want to look elsewhere for better DCI-P3 or Adobe RGB coverage.

The Full HD webcam located on the top bezel is an average performer for video calls; there are times when the quality feels as though it is just 720p.

A couple of 2W top-firing speakers power the Slim 7 Pro X on either side of the keyboard. They work as expected, nothing more, nothing less. If you are interested in superior audio quality, you would do well to hook it up to a pair of headphones.

Performance

You get an AMD Ryzen 7 6800HS processor underneath the hood mated to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM. There is no room for memory expansion for this model in Malaysia, nor will you find a dedicated graphics card.

Running on Windows 11, the Slim 7 Pro X’s day-to-day performance is fast and smooth, and loading programs from its 512GB (upgradable to 1TB) SSD is a snap. Of course, since it lacks a dedicated graphics card, you will find this laptop cannot handle any of the latest games.

The lack of video-processing muscle truly becomes apparent when you carry out tasks such as video editing, although you can surf the internet or pound away on a thesis or report with no issues whatsoever.

Battery

Battery life on the Slim 7 Pro X is above average, basically lasting from morning until lunch with some juice to spare. While every individual’s usage pattern is different, the typical user may have several Chrome browser tabs open, perhaps a word processor or spreadsheet program running, in addition to Bluetooth and WiFi enabled.

Doing so will see the laptop easily last for up to five hours before you have to worry about plugging it in. Heck, it might not be too optimistic to target six hours of computing, taking the 3K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate into consideration.

The Slim 7 Pro X charges via its USB Type-C port. With USB Power Delivery chargers readily available these days, this would mean fewer things for you to pack whenever you work outdoors.

The bottom line

The processor and integrated Radeon graphics chipset prove to be a potent combination for the road warrior. The display is wonderful to look at with high-colour accuracy, while the keyboard is a joy to type on.

Those who want monster performance may want to look elsewhere but, with prices starting from RM4,980, the Slim 7 Pro X offers plenty of bang for your hard-earned ringgit.
