Mention the Gold Coast to anyone, and the first thing that comes to mind is miles and miles of golden sands, crashing waves and sunny weather.
However, beyond its breathtaking beaches, the holiday capital of Australia offers tourists a myriad of attractions, from eateries and markets to scenic activities and wildlife.
Visitors are usually familiar with the coast’s five major suburbs: Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Main Beach, The Spit and the Hinterland.
While these suburbs house most of the popular tourist attractions, avid travellers may find themselves looking beyond the beaten path.
In collaboration with AirAsia X, here are three unique spots to visit at the Gold Coast.
1. Burleigh Heads
For a laidback alternative to busy beaches, visit Burleigh Heads, also known as ‘The Point’.
It offers great waters for surfing, swimming, as well as exciting dining and leisure activities.

Take in the scenic ocean views at Burleigh Point Lookout — you could even set up a picnic here while enjoying the sea breeze.
Next, make a stop at Rick Shores, a beachfront restaurant that serves Pan-Asian flavours using fresh, locally-sourced produce.
Burleigh Heads National Park is worth a visit if you enjoy nature walks and the chance to spot sea eagles, koalas and wallabies in their natural habitat.
Nearby, you will also find noteworthy breakfast or brunch spots, namely Social Brew, Commune and Paddock Bakery.
For those looking for shopping and dining options, check out Miami Marketta, a night market with live music and global street fare.
And there’s more! Like The Village Markets, a bi-monthly pop-up artisan market, as well as the Gold Coast Art & Craft Sunday Market.
2. Currumbin
This area showcases more natural greenery than most of the Gold Coast, thanks to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
Originally a bird sanctuary when it opened in 1947, it is now home to all kinds of native Australian wildlife.

Visitors can take part in lorikeet feedings, cuddle a koala and pet a kangaroo.
There is also a rainforest reserve called the Lost Valley, where you can spot unusual animals like the cassowary, and enjoy fun experiences like Breakfast with Koalas.
A nice spot to check out is Currumbin Creek, where you can rent stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and fishing gear from Boatshed Bait & Tackle.
Just a 20-minute drive away is Currumbin Rock Pools, a popular swimming hole for locals. It is suitable for families, with shallow sections where the little ones can take a dip to cool off.
3. The Hinterland
The Hinterland is sometimes referred to as ‘the green behind the gold’, and offers picturesque mountain rainforests to give tourists a change of pace.

Take a scenic drive to the nature-filled region that includes Tamborine Mountain, Numinbah Valley and the Unesco World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park.
Get in touch with nature by settling down in one of the rainforest campsites, where you can live in safari tents and enjoy the great outdoors.
Those looking for a more luxurious stay can opt for the award-winning Sky Lodges, which offer comfortable king-sized beds, a television and a cosy fireplace on the doorstep of the national park.
Nearby, tourists can also visit the rural paradise called Scenic Rim, one of Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Regions of the World. It offers vibrant art galleries and craft, suitable for travellers who enjoy the arts and want to bring home souvenirs.
