PETALING JAYA:
Valentine’s Day is around the corner! To all you lovebirds who haven’t secured a gift yet, why not head to the Sunny Side Up Market this weekend for some inspiration?

Founded in December 2016, event coordinator Aida Salleh said Sunny Side Up Market was created following the refurbishment of The Row in Kuala Lumpur, which comprises 22 pre-war shophouses turned into a vibrant commercial enclave.

“The owners were looking for an activity within the venue to draw a crowd and allow visitors to explore its tenants at the same time,” Aida told FMT.

“The aim was to develop a community over time that would enjoy The Row as their go-to place for business and leisure.”

To that end, Sunny Side Up Market was created to serve as a physical platform that supports small businesses, craftspersons and artisans, allowing them to introduce and sell their creations to the public.

Including this weekend’s edition, there have thus far been more than 30 instalments of the community market.

“We’ve been having a great run, thanks to our visitors, after pandemic restrictions were lifted in October 2021,” Aida added.

The vendors cover a wide range of categories including apparel, fashion accessories, bath and beauty, home decor and living, gifts and souvenirs, food and beverage, and even pets.

Yes, they are an animal-friendly event, so your non-human companions won’t be left behind!

So, which brands should you watch out for? Highlights include:

  • Oh Dayang, maker of batik jewellery;
  • Paper Shoot, touting eco-friendly digital cameras;
  • The Petal Archive, featuring accessories made with wildflowers;
  • Tito & Cha Cha, a local pet store;
  • Petite Gift Store for personalised gifts;
  • Oreias, offering eco-friendly apparel;
  • Common Market, presenting a handpicked range of low-waste wares; and
  • The Asli Co., which empowers indigenous peoples to produce modern handicraft to support their children’s education.

“We hope visitors will enjoy discovering these local businesses, get inspired through them, and feel proud to be Malaysian,” Aida said.

“Plus, there’s the joy of buying good-quality, locally produced items, interacting with their makers, and playing a part in supporting the local industry.”
