Many students want to study in western countries but are unable to because of high tuition fees and living expenses.

When Hannan Arshad from Pakistan, as well as Yanitrasari and Adzra Salsabila Devita from Indonesia found themselves in this situation, they considered the alternatives.

Malaysia became a viable solution and their decision was made easier upon learning that Malaysian universities ranked among the world’s top, with 13 within the top 600, according to QS World University Rankings 2023.

As Malaysia is a thriving transnational education hub, students can pursue a variety of high-quality foreign university degrees here.

Adzra, who nearly gave up on her dream of obtaining a UK degree, was overjoyed about studying in Malaysia. “I’m pursuing my undergraduate studies in Communication at Sunway University, which is affiliated with Lancaster University, UK. I’ll graduate with a degree from Sunway and another from Lancaster at a much lower cost.”

Having experienced an enriching educational journey in Malaysia, Yanitrasari chose to do her Masters here.

Like her compatriot, Yanitrasari realised she could fulfil her study ambitions in Malaysia. She chose to pursue a Bachelor of Psychological Science and was awarded a degree from Monash University Australia despite studying entirely in Malaysia.

“My lecturers were professional and welcomed discussions and new ideas. The best part? They treated students like their colleagues, making us feel appreciated and respected,” shared Yanitrasari.

Higher learning institutions in Malaysia ensure students are well-equipped with industry-relevant skills and knowledge to succeed in their careers.

Hannan, who studied International Business Management at Asia Pacific University (APU), does not regret his decision to study in Malaysia.

“The university’s programmes are very well laid out and we are exposed to everything related to our field of study,” he said, admitting that he would not have had a similar experience had he studied in Europe.

Low cost of living

While tuition fees vary depending on the institution, international undergraduate tuition in Malaysia averages at US$4,900 per year. The availability of scholarships further eases the financial burden on international students.

In fact, Hannan himself is a scholarship recipient, and he acknowledged how it helped him fund his degree and his current Master’s programme.

When it comes to living expenses, many international students will find the cost of living manageable and more affordable in Malaysia than in many other countries.

“It depends on your lifestyle. With RM3,000 per month, you can live in a comfortable place and have some leisure time now and then,” Yanitrasari said.

World-class academic facilities

The excellent learning environment, world-class academic facilities and the comfort of modern city life further enable international students to experience quality time here.

Adzra said she appreciated the safe, peaceful and vibrant atmosphere in Malaysia. “The locals are friendly, and they make it easy for me to be myself.”

Hannan shared: “I feel Malaysia should be my first choice as I gained a world-class education at a fraction of the price and got a job here.”

Yanitrasari shared the same enthusiasm. “I enjoyed my time in Malaysia, and it was one of the best decisions I made,” she said.

With many Malaysian universities making their mark in leading university rankings, the government’s goal of attracting 250,000 international students by 2025 is well within reach.
