PETALING JAYA:
In yet another blow to the Malaysian moviegoing community, GSC today confirmed that the widely anticipated superhero film “Thor: Love & Thunder” will not be playing on local big screens.

The announcement was made on GSC’s official Facebook page today at 12pm, which read as follows: “Dear valued customers, please be informed that Disney has updated that Marvel Studios’ ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ will not be releasing in Malaysia after all.

“We appreciate your patience and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

It sheepishly added: “Please buy our merchandise ok.” Included was a witty caption below the Facebook announcement, which read: “Thor: Love and Takde.”

The “Thor” sequel, directed by Taika Waititi, was originally slated for a July 7 premiere before being postponed to July 21. However, on July 13, it was announced that its release would be withheld indefinitely.

While no official statement has been made by either Disney or Marvel, it is likely the film’s depiction of a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) character might have run afoul of the Malaysian film censorhip board.

Just last month, another Disney film, “Lightyear“, was pulled from release, with the board then releasing a statement on Disney’s refusal to allow cuts to scenes that also depicted a LGBT character.

Not surprisingly, the reaction from local netizens to GSC’s “Thor” announcement has been largely negative, with many expressing faux surprise over the decision, as well as sympathy for GSC.

Netizen Joe Lee wrote: “Kesian, GSC. I saw all the promotional items for Thor being set up nicely at Mid Valley. With lighted dance floor kinda mode. All of these and the movies cannot release. Haiyo.”

Others said they would watch the film when it is released on streaming, with one user, Wan Midgee, writing: “Wait for a few months later, we will catch it on Disney+ Hotstar.”

Some netizens simply responded with pirate-related imagery, hinting at the likelihood that Malaysians would be catching the film one way or another.

With a GIF of the Jolly Roger flying, netizen Will Tee jibed: “Ahoy, mateys. So, which one of you wish to join me crew and sail the seven seas again?”
